We begin our series around the ‘embodied’ faith. What does it mean theologically and missiologically that the resurrected Jesus retained his scars from the crucifixion? Christians can oftentimes be disconnected from the physical world because we cling to a disembodied vision of spirituality. Jesus sends his disciples into the world both having had them touch his physical body and having breathed the HS ‘on them.” Another key piece in this passage is the word translated “believe” from the Greek root pisteuo, which means “trust.” How does it change the way we read this passage if we substitute “believe” with “trust.” Faith is trust in Jesus more than mere cognition of him. May we be sent out as embodied witnesses of the Gospel and not disconnected passer-bys.

The miracle of Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the renewal of wonder and awe and Life everlasting to all of humanity. On the first day of the week, early in the morning the women visit the tomb to honor the dead. But they are interrupted by the amazing. He is not here! Why do you look for the living among the dead? What are we holding on to? Why do we cling to things that hold us mired in death. Arise arises into the renewed life!

Jesus came into the world like a small sliver, a mustard seed. a nuisance. an annoyance. a threat to the entire foundations of religion and culture. He is the King that is turning things upside down. But he is not entering Jerusalem as a glory-seeking king for the adulation of the crowds, nor as a conquering king exacting a violent revolution. He comes on a donkey. He comes in peace and humility to subvert the powers and usher in the Kingdom of God. Join the resistance!

Luke 3:1-18 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. 6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’” 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yours

One of the ways we see Jesus is by the fruit born in our lives. But sometimes we get discouraged. We don’t see Jesus. God is silent. Has he abandoned you? Are you forgotten in the discard pile? Paul’s encouragement here is that: God is the one who started the work in you, and that it is a sure thing that this work will continue to completion. Be encouraged Jesus is coming.
