To mark the centenary of the death of John Redmond, President Michael D. Higgins attended the “Redmond 100 seminar” organised by Wexford Borough District. After the seminar, the President attended a ceremony at St John’s Cemetery, at which President Higgins will lay a wreath at the grave of John Redmond. Concern was founded by John and Kay O’Loughlin-Kennedy in 1968, as a response to the famine in the Nigerian province of Biafra. From the resulting "Send One Ship" action, the organisation has grown into a major NGO working in over 50 countries around the world. President Higgins has met with Concern staff on a large number of occasions, including international summit meetings on the Sustainable Development Goals and humanitarian aid. In January 2014, Concern presented President Higgins with the Fr. Aengus Finucane Award for Services to Humanity. In 2017, President Higgins paid tribute to one of Concern's co-founders, Fr. Jack Finucane.

President Higgins hosted a reception in support of the "Laudato Tree" project. Inspired by Pope Francis' 2015 environmental encyclical "Laudato Si" and the "Great Green Wall" project across 11 African countries, the "Laudato Tree" project aims to build support for climate action and tree planting, in Ireland and the Sahel region. In the address, the President emphasises the global nature of Ireland’s cultural heritage, the significance of the Irish diaspora and the “common history and identity we share despite the borders, oceans and miles that may separate us.” Building on a theme that has featured in many of the President’s speeches, the President highlights the importance of communication and of “a sense of inclusivity and the coming together of Irish people wherever they may be in the world in a spirit of support and solidarity.”

International Women’s Day is a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements and highlights the need for gender equality, at home and abroad. The President unveiled artworks at an exhibition entitled 'Coming Home: Art and the Great Hunger' At the exhibition’s launch at Dublin Castle, the President thanked the organisers and representatives of Quinnipiac University, which the President says is "a university which has emerged as a leading centre of understanding of An Gorta Mór." The President has also written the preface to the exhibition's catalogue, in which he said that "An Gorta Mór was a defining moment in the history of modern Ireland and a turning point in the history of our people."

At the start of his State Visit, President Higgins met with the President of the Hellenic Republic, H.E. Prokopis Pavlopoulos. The two leaders met at the Presidential Mansion in central Athens, the official residence of the Greek President. The Mansion was built as a royal palace in 1897. The State Visit by the President and Sabina Higgins comes almost sixteen years after the last such Visit at Head of State level, and at an important time for the European Union. Diplomatic relations have existed between Ireland and Greece for just over 40 years, since 1977. Other State Visits have taken place in 2002 when former President McAleese visited the country, and in 2000, when the former President of Greece visited Ireland
