Sinopsis
The Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW is the worlds first research centre dedicated to the study of international refugee law. Through high-quality research feeding into public policy debate and legislative reform, the Centre brings a principled, human rights-based approach to refugee law and forced migration in Australia, the Asia-Pacific region, and globally. It provides an independent space to connect academics, policymakers and NGOs, and creates an important bridge between scholarship and practice. It also provides thought leadership in the community through public engagement and community outreach.

Good Evidence, Bad Politics: Overcoming the noise in climate change and migration policy
30/08/2018 Duración: 01h18minEvidence matters. Yet even before “fake news” became a political weapon, it’s been notoriously difficult to get evidence into the policymaking process. How can we keep good evidence from being overwhelmed by bad politics? In this conversation, moderated by ABC Radio National journalist Eleanor Hall, three world-renowned experts talk about their experience from the front lines of research and policymaking in contentious areas – climate change, refugees and, where the two meet, climate change- and disaster-related displacement. Professor John Church is Australia’s most credentialled expert on sea-level rise and a long-time research scientist with the government CSIRO. He joined UNSW in 2016 as a professor in the Climate Change Research Centre, so he’s seen Australia’s approach to science and international obligations from inside and outside government. Community-led refugee sponsorship: What can Australia learn from the UK experience?
30/07/2018 Duración: 01h19minOrdinary citizens around the world are coming together to sponsor refugees, an experience that can transform individual lives and strengthen communities. As Australia is now shaping its own refugee private sponsorship initiative, it’s a critical time to learn from international best practice. Dr Russell Rook, a leading international expert, shares his experience in developing the UK’s community-led model of refugee sponsorship, which gives charities, faith groups, churches and businesses the opportunity to support and resettle refugees. He is joined by Khanh Hoang from the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law at UNSW Sydney, and Shankar Kasynathan from Amnesty International Australia, to explore the history and future of community refugee sponsorship in Australia. This event was held on the 26 July 2018 and was co-hosted by the Australian National University, the Community Refugee Sponsorship Initiative and the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law.

Boats and Beyond
24/06/2018 Duración: 01h16minAi Weiwei’s Law of the Journey, 2017, an imposing installation featuring a 60-metre-long boat crowded with hundreds of anonymous refugee figures, provokes this frank discussion of Australia’s response to asylum seekers arriving by boat – and today’s approach to refugees globally. What is the relevance of the 1951 Refugee Convention when more people have been forced to flee their homes now than at any time since the World War? How does international law influence domestic politics around the world? What are the repercussions of Australia’s bipartisan policy of offshore processing on Manus and Nauru, and is the country prepared to deal with current crises, such as the Rohingya exodus from Myanmar, or future pressures of people displaced by climate change? International legal expert Guy Goodwin-Gill of UNSW’s Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law; lawyer and prize-winning Offshore author Madeline Gleeson; and award-winning Guardian journalist Ben Doherty talk law, policy, politics and solutions. As global displacement reaches its highest recorded levels, many governments around the world are seeking not to welcome but to deter asylum seekers.
