  • Ep. 12: How He's Using His Gifts

    11/10/2016 Duración: 42min

Anthony Galloway wasn’t willing to be another cog in the system. He’s a smart, twenty-something year old African-American man who chose to go into the field of education. He came up through the system, and learned how to excel in it. He also knew that he wanted to be part of the change in public education that allowed children of color access to the same resources and opportunities as children in white schools or private ones. Anthony co-founded an Agile Learning Center, now facilitated by both him and long-time educator, Julia Cordero. I think you’re gonna find this discussion interesting because Anthony’s an educator who saw the school system for what it was and is, and started his own school to create something better. 21/09/2016 Duración: 51min

On this episode, business-owner and 16-year unschooling mama, Itiel Mcvay, shares her many insights. Our conversation is really about the clear parallel between how learning happens for entrepreneurs and for children. We also talk about the dangers of traditional schooling and learning how to listen and watch while our children show us exactly who they are and what they need.Support the showDig this show? 14/09/2016 Duración: 01h09min

On episode 7 of Fare of the Free Child, I break bread with Curron Gajadhar- an artist and movement trainer who was based in Atlanta, but now goes wherever his process takes him. We address the fear of what might happen if we don’t control children through religion and rules and physical consequence. And we discuss the fare we pay, both as children and adults, when we use fear instead of self-discovery as our compass.Support the showDig this show? • Ep. 4: Black Queer Mothering

    23/08/2016 Duración: 48min

Trelani Michelle is a writer, wife, and mama of two. Her son, CJ, is 10, and her daughter, Kobe, is 6. She is a versed writer who has shed light and offered refreshing perspectives on everything from juvenile detention system to cursing when communicating with God. I’m also sharing space with Trelani Michelle this episode because Trelani is part of a group that is definitely underrepresented in parenting circles and discussions about how we choose to parent — that group is black queer mothers, so we’ll explore what that means specifically for Trelani, as a queer black woman married to a straight black man. Listen and enjoy as Trelani and I get all up in our feelings about motherhood, relationships, education, and radical self-expression.Support the showDig this show? • Ep. 3: The LIFE School - Atlanta

    11/08/2016 Duración: 40min

"Our school is really to empower students to have more ownership over their education. High school is usually this mad dash of checking off boxes to create a great portfolio. Because of that they lack of sense of who they are and how they can add value to the world.  To identify needs in the community, and know how to problem-solve, to organize, and to bring about sustainable change inside their communities." • Ep. 2: South Africa & India Reimagined

    02/08/2016 Duración: 39min

"That shift from beloved, all-black schools to white schools where black students were always seen as interlopers, as not really belonging, taught me the difference between education as the practice of freedom and education that merely strives to reinforce domination." -bell hooks   In this episode, we’re breaking the stereotype that unschooling is a white, male, middle-class thing. I’m so excited to share a peek into Zakiyya Ismail’s life and work. She is a longtime self-directed education advocate and mother of two young adults and a 9-year old, all of whom are life-long unschoolers. Zakiyya and her husband wanted their children to have the space to define themselves outside of predominant ideologies, and they saw that school was not where that would happen.    “Why should we restrict ourselves to our geographic location, when we can find people we can connect with anywhere in the world?” -Zakiyya Ismael, The Learning Reimagined Conference, South AfricaSupport the showDig this show? • Ep. 1: Unschooling Explained - with Tamika Middleton

    28/07/2016 Duración: 41min

Welcome to Episode One of Fare of the Free Child! If you enjoy what you hear, please help more people find this podcast by rating it on iTunes. Thanks! This week, my co-facilitator is Atlanta based activist, community organizer, and unschooling Mama, Tamika Middleton, who you heard at the beginning of this episode. Tamika addressed the FEAR of children leading themselves, which is precisely what unschooling addresses and over time, resolves. So, as with every episode of FOFC, we start with a FEAR and then we address the FARE (the cost) of that fear, what it’s costing us and our children when we don’t push back against that fear, and then we talk about what we can do to minimize that fear.Tamika and her family (her husband, Demetrius, and their two children, Amani, their 9-year-old son and Asha, their nearly 3-year-old daughter) have been such an inspiration to me as a black unschooler, as a feminist, and as woman of color who prioritizes the liberation of her people. Tamika and I share the philosophy that self

  • Ep. 0: Welcome and Why This Show

    10/07/2016 Duración: 11min

This fall, I’m launching a podcast for Black and Brown parents who practice alternative parenting options to the traditional education model that is school. Options like unschooling, worldschooling, roadschooling, slowschooling, eclectic homeschooling, and the myriad other ways that we and our children embrace curiosity-driven, lifelong learning.   The podcast is called Fare of the Free Child, and its purpose is to help me amplify the underrepresented voices and unique concerns of people of color looking for real viable options to the oppressive systems that our children are expected to live and learn within.   I want to use this space to create community for adults engaged in unconventional black and brown parenting and caregiving to be heard, and to find and support each other.  And since I’m an unschooling, location independent, non-christian, Caribbean, intersectional feminist, mermaid identifying, radical self-expression practicing, blackity-black woman and mother, raising two superdope black girls wit
