The Hunting Dog Podcast

My season starts 1128 miles from home. With room to roam, friends to visit with and birds to be found. This year four of my regulars could not make the trip. Others stepped in to fill the beds and the fields

Jake Bartells joins me to discuss the upcoming NAVHDA election. He shares his passion and vision for the future of the mission statement of NAVHDA that was formed in 1969.

I catch up with some buddies and we talk doves from Virginia to South Dakota. Then we get excited about the bird reports from my favorite place. It sounds like we are in for a doozie!!

Nate Akey stopped over to the kennel to catch up on everything from soup to nuts. Nate has hunted with his shorthairs from Michigan to the Pacific Ocean. Since grad school he has been working in the outdoor industry, training and testing his dogs and recently started working for ONX. We talk about that and a whole bunch more!

For fifty years the Carters have been the OG couple in NAVHDA. We share some stories and some history of the "Why" we do what we do with our friends and our dogs. The past can help guide us into the future. The future is now!

Jeff has had a dozen breeds over 40  years. Some good some bad and a few in between. He is my oldest hunting buddy and he is going to get back in the fields and woods with me. We go through the list and narrow down the next dog that Jeff is going to get!!

Meet Bobby Brown, he is a dogman man through and through. I had a short phone call with him after a friends hunt test. I knew right away that Blair, Boone and Bobby's story needed to be recorded.

Yes Jake is running for president of NAVHDA but that's not why he is here. When I found out his hunt testing track record, I had to get him on to give us the backstory. And it's a good story. The EB or Epagneul Breton is a lot of dog in a little package. Jake has shown the testing world that a good dog can do!! Before we hit the microphone I asked Zach to walk my property to see what has happened in three the years since we logged our woods. I learned a lot! RGS/AWS is the shining star in the heavens we call home. Projects are popping up all over and the future is brite!!

Karl Gunzer and Dr RuthAnn Lobos join the podcast to catch up on whats new, clear up what's old and straight us out on what it takes to put the best food in your dogs bowl. 

I invited Will to come back on the show to get a deeper understanding of his past, current and future thoughts on what we all hold so dearly. And of course some fun stories of favorite places and the people that made them special.

Ronnie Cowan has the best job on campus, and maybe the most important one. He is the Outdoor Recreation Specialist at the University of Tennessee. We talk about his vision for the program, his new found love of waterfowl hunting, his young Labrador and his first non pointing, pointing dog..... We also cover wild hogs, bears and getting the quail back!

Terry Wilson was NAVHDA's Vice President. His recent passing left a hole that will be hard to fill. Personally I only knew him from a few conversations and judging with him once. His passion for the dogs and friends he made along the way, was evident in his actions, support and philanthropy.  

I took a road trip to North Dakota with the dogs to see some friends and work the dogs. Then I dropped to South Dakota to lock up my plans for the fall. For the first time I feel like I am packed and ready to go, even though its 5 plus months away. This season will be another bumper year. Not because of the birds, but because of the friends I have made, and the ones I hope to meet
