1985 is known as "The Year of the Spy" for good reason. Numerous Americans were arrested that year in treason and espionage cases, including such notables as John Walker and his "Family of Spies," Edward Lee Howard, and Ronald Pelton. However, clearly the strangest of the 1985 espionage arrests was that of Jonathan Pollard and his wife Anne, who were charged with spying for Israel. While most of the famous 1980s spy cases involved long-term investigations running for years, the Pollard case ran less than two weeks from first report to the actual arrests. As the Cold War was ending in the late 1980s, Americans might have been justified in thinking that their intelligence services were winning the clandestine spy battles across the globe. In fact, the U.S. was losing badly, despite the multiple arrests for espionage during 1985, known as “The Year of the Spy.” In fact, out of the arrests came a new generation of enemy operatives, and one of the worst of these was Aldrich "Rick" Ames. Working out of the CIA's Soviet Counterintelligence Group at their headquarters in Langley, Virginia, Ames had access to virtually everything CIA knew about the USSR, including America's own deep cover assets. In 1985, amid a nasty divorce, severe money problems, and a chronic drinking addiction,  Ames approached a Soviet contact in Washington, DC, and began his career as one of America's most deadly spies. It is a sad truth that most Americans have little or no idea of where the Black Sea region is, much less which countries are located there. Notwithstanding the failure of American schools to teach world geography, the Black Sea region is rarely visited by Westerners. It nevertheless remains one of the most politically important and strategically significant places on Earth. The Black Sea is literally the divide between the Christian and Muslim religions in Eurasia, and is bordered by some of the most volatile countries in the world today. In fact, American military forces have only rarely operated in the region, and then mostly within the borders of our NATO ally, Turkey. There was however an exception to this, just after World War I, when for a few years America operated a squadron of the U.S. Navy warships in the Black Sea.
