  • Dream a Little Deeper: 17 - Robin Hood

    10/08/2022 Duración: 01h54min

Yes, we talk about furries. Terra also talks a lot today. These points are unrelated. This time, ROY Disney dies. Before he died though, he oversaw the completion of Walt Disney World. This went, uh…well, it went. This, coupled with the energy crisis and shuffle of leadership, sends the company further into the chaos that Walt’s death created. Needless to say, this affects the production of Robin Hood. It’d be great if these animators could catch a break at any point, huh? Anyways, Terra posits the fondness for this movie is influenced by nostalgia. Our guests argue that the fun and joy of the movie is infectious, which makes the tone shift at the end really hit. Terra thinks the movie feels made for TV in multiple ways, Alex thinks the focus is too much on people who aren’t Robin Hood, and they both discuss why the children characters are better in this than the Aristocat children. Terra talks about feudal economic hierarchies. The Sheriff of Nottingham is the most despicable villain in the whole film, King

  • Steve 'N Destroy: Episode 34 - Against the Dark

    04/08/2022 Duración: 01h15min

It’s Steve ‘N Destroy Episode 34!!! The big 3-4! Steven Seagal makes a brief appearance to fight some absolute, definite, 100% zombies in the vampire flick Against the Dark! You won’t believe your ears as James and Dylan struggle to talk about the movie. The debut of a hit new segment: What’s in Your Fridge? Conversely, the debut of a terrible new podcast slogan we don’t feel comfortable typing out.

  • I Assure You We're Podcasting: 2 - Mallrats

    04/08/2022 Duración: 01h17min

  • Dream a Little Deeper: 16 - The Aristocats

    04/08/2022 Duración: 01h44min

The corporate structure of Disney falls into disarray after Walt dies, and the company finds itself in creative paralysis trying to stay true to the “What Would Walt Do” mantra. This, naturally, involves focusing on the parks more than actual movies, which means Alex decides the most prudent thing to do is talk to her dad about accounting and finances for longer than you would expect. Some of our guests sing the praises of The Aristocats from a nostalgic, personal perspective. Terra and Alex, however, are significantly less enthusiastic about having watched this film. They balk at the French-ness of the French setting, comparing the film to 101 Dalmatians in connection to the setting and structure. Alex is annoyed by some characters, namely Thomas O’Malley, who cannot pick a lane in terms of what model of masculinity he wants to follow. Terra takes issue with the Dutchess part of the relationship and how she regards Thomas. Terra fully despises the children, but Alex has a more nuanced read on their depiction

  • It Pod to Be You: Episode 64 - Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice

    04/08/2022 Duración: 01h07min

  • Double Edged Double Bill 219: Brad Pitt Travels to the Cool World of Ad Astra

    02/08/2022 Duración: 01h33min

Brad Pitt is one of our great movie stars. So, it only seems natural for Adam, Thomas and returning guest Mel Glenn Gore to devote an episode of Double Edged Double Bill to him just in time for his latest vehicle Bullet Train! First, a young Brad Pitt tries to act against dirty cartoon characters in the infamous failure Cool World! Then, a more mature Brad Pitt works through his daddy issues in the cold reaches of space in Ad Astra! Together, our trio answers the crucial questions. Did Cool World almost kill Brad Pitt's career? What will win win us our absentee Neptune daddy's love? Which two films will they cover on next week's episode about revenge films? Well, avoid zero gravity space rover chases and doodle femme fatales so you can listen to find out! • I Assure You We're Podcasting: 1 - Clerks

    01/08/2022 Duración: 51min

In the beginning, there was Clerks. At least for Kevin Smith. Your host for this Smith series, covering the works of the man himself, is Mike (@Mumbles3K). Leading up to Clerks 3, he’ll talk to guests of all types, including Max (@JMaxHegel) who happens to be his first guest! They talk about Smith’s early work and the 1994 film Clerks, of course.

  • Dream a Little Deeper: 15 - The Jungle Book

    27/07/2022 Duración: 01h56min

Walt dies in this one, so the history section is long and complicated because Walt was extremely petty and couldn’t help screwing people over (both family and employees), even until his final breath. Walt’s brother wasn’t much better, he just decided to commit tax fraud primarily. Alex and Terra discuss if tickets sold or money made is the best way to judge the popularity of movies. Terra gives a very brief overview of Rudyard Kipling, one of our guests asks if there are wolves in India, and Alex remarks upon the obvious whiteness of all the voice actors and explains imperialism. Our hosts welcome the return of their dear friend, the cultural content warning, and dig into what that could POSSIBLY be in reference to throughout this movie set in the jungles of India. Terra doesn’t necessarily ship Baloo and Bagheera, they just are getting major divorced dad vibes from this relationship. Our hosts argue about the ending and if it makes any logical sense at all (it doesn’t, Terra is correct, don’t listen to Alex)

  • Double Edged Double Bill 218: One Crazy Rough Night From Dusk Till Dawn

    26/07/2022 Duración: 01h09min

Prepare for one crazy night with Double Edged Double Bill! This week, Adam and Thomas explore the subgenre where most of the actions occur over the course of one night via two specific films. First, Scarlett Johansson leads a comedy ensemble about a bachelorette party gone wrong that itself never goes right with Rough Night! Then, George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino shift from hot day to dark night and from crime thriller to horror action with From Dusk Till Dawn! Together, our duo answers the crucial questions. How crucial is balancing varying comedic tones? What happens when Frankenstein eats shellfish? Which two films will they choose for next week's episode about Brad Pitt? Well, finish those drinks and grab a wooden stake so you can survive the night & listen to find out! • It Pod to Be You: Episode 63 - The Apartment

    21/07/2022 Duración: 47min

Your host Manish (@vertigay314) welcomes David Rosen (@bydavidrosen) from the Piecing It Together Podcast onto the podcast to discuss The Apartment. They talk about how important and influential the 1960 Billy Wilder Best Picture winner is, and the iconic duo of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

  • Dream a Little Deeper: 14 - The Sword in the Stone

    20/07/2022 Duración: 01h20min

This week, Alex stresses Walt’s disinterest in animation and the resultant corporate changes surrounding the production of The Sword in the Stone, including the beginnings of intergenerational animator drama. Only one of our interview guests had actually seen Sword in the Stone, so the bulk of the work falls to Terra and Alex to discuss how mid this whole movie is. Terra compares this to the package films, has their faith in the storybook opening broken, and nitpicks historical accuracy. Alex thinks Merlin is a bad teacher, highlights the nonsensical depiction of the monarchy throughout the film, and calls this a “coffee shop AU King Arthur fan fic.” Our hosts praise Archimedes as the best part of the film, Terra can’t help but bring up Fantasia, and squirrels do be horny in this movie. Like, honestly, it’s real weird; what were they thinking putting this in the movie???? Originally recorded October 30th, 2021. • Double Edged Double Bill 217: Travel Back to the 1970s for 54 & The Nice Guys

    19/07/2022 Duración: 01h11min

Time to put on your bellbottoms and do the hustle all night long for this week's Double Edged Double Bill! At the behest of their Patrons, Adam and Thomas are traveling back to the age of disco and smoking indoors with an episode all about 1970s period pieces. First, Studio 54's cool vibes and Mike Myers' Oscar hopes are dashed by executive meddling with 54! Then, Shane Black puts '70s attire on Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe for The Nice Guys! Together, our duo answers the crucial questions. How much of an improvement is the director's cut of 54 compared to the theatrical version? What element do filmmakers forget about in constructing period pieces? Which two films will they pick for next week's episode about One Crazy Night movies? Well, get out on the dance floor and prove that you're invincible so you can listen in to find out! • Dream a Little Deeper: 13 - One Hundred and One Dalmatians

    13/07/2022 Duración: 02h07min

To start off this first real episode back, Alex makes the rather bold assumption that we would post this before a full year had passed between episodes (oops) before digging into the company-wide changes and production issues surrounding 101 Dalmatians, including the advent of Xerox animation. Alex also examines the heteronormative attitudes baked into the film, which feeds into a very critical discussion of the film’s understanding of economics and class (this devolves into a very long Jane Austen tangent that’s all Terra’s fault). Alex and our guests delve into what really makes Cruella work as a villain or possibly a feminist icon, which leads Terra and Alex into a debate about the role of women in the movie. Terra is terrible at basic math. Originally recorded October 9th, 2021. Listen to all of Dream A Little Deeper: Season 2 on our Patreon now: patreon.com/talkfilmsociety

  • Double Edged Double Bill 216: 2022 Drives An Ambulance Into Deep Water

    12/07/2022 Duración: 01h13min

We're past the halfway point of 2022, so Adam and Thomas are checking in with the films of the year so far! First, Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas play a sexy game that leads to murder in Deep Water! Then, Michael Bay lets Jake Gyllenhaal loose in an emergency vehicle and follows him with a drone for Ambulance! Together, our duo answers the crucial questions. What is the current state of action cinema? How intense can Dunkin Donuts dropping era Ben Affleck get? Which two films will they discuss on next week's episode about 1970s period pieces? Well, stop blasting Christopher Cross and put those snails back in their containers so you can listen to find out! • Dream a Little Deeper: Bonus - Q&A

    07/07/2022 Duración: 01h17min

Oh, hey! Didn’t see you come in! Been quite the month off huh? Ok, so obviously Alex and Terra have been gone for longer than a month, but they have certainly been busy!!! In an effort to re-familiarize themselves with the process of making a podcast (a thing that no one should ever do), they take the time to answer some listener-submitted questions about their personal lives, movies in general, and address larger questions about Disney’s output and existence. Originally recorded October 2nd, 2021
