Holmes was sentenced to hanging for the murder of Benjamin F Pitezel on May 7th 1986, when he was aged just 34 years old. While there was a lot of circumstantial evidence that he also murdered Alice, Nellie and Howard Pitezel, and there were suspicions surrounding many others, he was never tried for them. Frank Geyer, started his career with the City of Philadelphia Police Department on 6 May 1876 as a patrolman. In January 1888 he was promoted to detective and in 1894 was assigned a new case, involving suspected insurance fraud by H H Holmes. Holmes settled in comfortably in Chicago, he was well liked, he was charismatic, intelligent and fun to be around, nobody had a bad word to say about him. He worked hard and saved his money, his family was an inconvenience and he sent very little back to his wife Clara and their son Robert.
