Help me keep close to my baby
28/09/2017 Duración: 27minThe first minutes, hours and days with a newborn baby are crucial for setting up the best possible adjustment to life outside the womb, learning to breastfeed and recovery for mother and baby. This is best achieved through supporting new parents to be the main ones handling the new baby. We hear from Dr Robyn Thompson, midwife and breastfeeding researcher, on why it is so important for handling of a new baby by others is best kept to a minimum if all is well - even hospital staff. New parents need lots of quiet time to adjust to their lives as parents, to recover from birth and to support the baby's own process of learning to breastfeed. We also hear from a mother of two children who knew instinctively the importance of minimising lots of outside contact during the early weeks and as a consequence, her babies were very calm. However, not everyone understood her intentions, but she held her ground on this. She calls for extended family and friends to respect new parents' choices to keep life quiet and simpl

The missing link in birth preparation
11/08/2017 Duración: 27minAccording to the Relationship Research Institute in Seattle, approx two thirds of couples find their relationship has suffered within three years of the birth of a child. Within five years of the birth of a first child, 13 percent of married couples divorce. This rate goes up to 39% for defacto couples 5 years after the child’s birth.*Surely there’s some preparation couples can do, rather than adjusting their relationship on the run after baby arrives. In this episode we meet Tondi Gilfillan and Sean Tonnet, relationship counsellors from Interrelate Family Centres, and discuss the importance of preparing our relationship during pregnancy for the enormous challenges. We explore how to build 'relationship scaffolding' and understand 'your dance as a couple'. A key tip is to discuss expectations you have about your new lives together, for example who will care for the baby and how.Further reading:"Becoming Us" by Elly Taylorwww.interrelate.org.au* https://www.babble.com/relationships/breaking-up-after-baby/Cl

"As Long as the Baby is Healthy" - Part 2
14/07/2017 Duración: 27minWe all want a healthy baby, there's no question of that, but Sally believes there are underlying beliefs to the common phrase "As long as the baby is healthy" that deserve closer examination. The first three underlying beliefs were covered in Part 1:http://www.spreaker.com/user/pregnancybirthandbeyond/as-long-as-the-baby-is-healthy-part-1In this episode, part 2, Sally covers the following underlying beliefs:* “Birth is dangerous and needs to be managed medically. Positive births are due to luck.”* “Labour and birth are simply painful, pointless torture."* “My experience is irrelevant and people who seek a positive experience are selfish and exposing the baby to risk.”SPEAKERSDr Kirsten Small, obstetrician and PhD candidateProfessor Alec Welsh, University of NSW and obstetrician at Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney Dr Sarah Buck

The emotional side of fertility issues
03/07/2017 Duración: 22minWhen you want something, that for many is fundamental to their human existence, a biological drive, to carry a baby and nurture a baby... to raise a family, it can be emotionally devastating for a couple or individual when despite all the attempts, falling pregnant or keeping a pregnancy just isn't happening. One in six couples in Australia and NZ experience infertility. The infertility lies equally with both men and women 40% each, 10% in both partners and the other 10% is unknown. Age does play a role in fertility issues, couples in their 20's have a 25% chance of falling pregnant whereas one in three women over the age of 35 experience infertility issues and once she reaches 40, women have only a 5% chance of falling pregnant with regular sexual activity. This episode of Pregnancy Birth and Beyond we shine a light on the often silent yet emmotionally painful topic of infertility, from the personal account of my guest to her professional insights working with women and families experiencing the grief

The good enough parent; rapture & repair
26/06/2017 Duración: 27minAre you a good enough parent? With all the demands and expectations of raising babies and children in the modern world, from programs offering promises for creating 'super babies' as early as starting in the womb, the pressure to be the perfect parent and have the perfect child is all too prevalent. When a parent inevitably fails in this perfection have they doomed their child for life? If the child's birth wasn't the most peaceful entrance into the world or early separation occurred has the mother, or parent already failed their baby setting a imprint of irreversible damage of a broken bond OR is it that the good enough parent actually is all you need to be to raise adaptive and resilient adults. This episode of Pregnancy Birth and Beyond we explore how early experiences during the pre and perinatal period impact on how a person develops. Our guest for this episode is Dr Holly Goldberg. Holly is a specialist in pre and peri Natal psychology and has been working with childbearing families for the past 20 year

the Changing Landscape of Medicine
16/06/2017 Duración: 27minMoving from a disease management based model of care and toward a patient-centred model of care Functional Medicine is able to treat disease at its root cause, rather than merely managing symptoms. Integrative Medicine is practiced by many practitioners around the world who hold a core understanding of treating the whole person, not just their diagnosis. Lets take a peek at these models and our existing model of healthcare, both globally and here in Australia.Produced and Presented by Annalee Atia 2017Copyright PBB Media Annalee Atia 2017Welcome to this Special Feature episode of pregnancy birth and beyond; The Changing landscape of Medicine around the world and how Australian physicians and consumers are inspired to ask better questions about our healthcare system. Adolescence: The Challenges and the Opportunities
09/06/2017 Duración: 27minRobin Grille speaks on the era of adolescence, the unique challenges for not only our adolescents in their transformation, but also for us as their parents and guides. Our adolescents can press our buttons, bring out stress and fear in us, but this can have the effect of pushing them away from us, unable to hear. And in this space, we find ourselves also unable to learn from them. Instead, Robin Grille poses the idea that we can use this period to enquire deeply into what triggers our responses to our adolescents. It is possible that our negative reactions are linked to our 'unfinished business' from our younger years. Perhaps by revisiting this period, our kids help finally grow us up.Music: "Natural Selections" by SampologyPresented by Sally Cusack, first aired on 99.9 BayFM Byron Bay on 5 June 2017.
