So things are going to look a lot different this year in classrooms all across the country. When you think about how to assess students what might be the first thing that comes to mind. Tests.. Projects.. The tools we use to assess these tasks often include a marking scheme or a rubric. But what if the tests and projects were simply the tools we used to assess the skills students demonstrated. And...the rubrics, learning goals, success criteria were not based on the product produced by the skills demonstrated. This would mean that the projects we designed and assigned and the tests that we developed wouldn't need to be the same for each student, nor would we need to make a new rubric for every iteration of what our students made. This is why I want you to look differently at assessment. The pressure is on and there is an increased pressure being placed on teachers to provide synchronous learning.   Never heard that word before?   That's because the better way to describe this overly complicated term is live teaching.   Just the thought of live teaching makes so many teachers nervous and rightly so. While there are advantages there are also some major concerns about privacy, access, and equity.   Despite these objections, it looks like synchronous learning is becoming more and more the expectation of teachers these days. One big concern with teachers right now is how to provide assessment and feedback. I wanted to share with you my mindset when it comes to providing feedback and assessment for teachers of students. There is no one way to provide quality feedback and no it doesn't need to be all about writing paragraphs in response to everything that they are doing. Let's review the guidelines set out for teachers. Then we can explore some ideas on how to provide student's feedback. We may not be evaluating and nothing we do is going to count however I am still marking their work and some of my own feedback will be given in value out of 10.
