The era of wrestling where being obnoxiously certain of the superiority of your opinion could actually make you an OK living is where we're returning to this time. Yet again, Simon (@simoncross3) has picked an event that he attended live, but this time Lorcan (@lorcanmullan) doesn't have as many kind words to say about the promotion that it is, as opposed to 2016 NXT. What he does have many words for, though, are both WhatCulture and the fanbase that it cultivated. The match itself sees the once and future John Morrison face a young upstart who now is plying his trade in the New Japan's Young Lions division. With a mixture of trepidation and a very obnoxious sighing, Simon (@simoncross3) has to take another chance on watching the shoot-style pro wrestling of the late 80s and early 90s that was a prototypical presentation of what would eventually become mixed martial arts. This time it's Akira Maeda's debut RINGS show. The fall of the Iron Curtain saw an influx of Russian wrestlers, many of them trained in the sambo style that eventually would bring Khabib Nurmagamedov to the UFC. Volk Han, also of Dagestan, literally wrestled his first match and within the year was one of the most popular foreign workers in Japan. For the fourth time, Will Ospreay and Shingo Takagi have fought each other in a singles match. For the fourth time, it has achieved or surpasssed the five-star score for Dave Meltzer. This match, the first for a championship in the form of Ospreay's IWGP World Heavyweight title, is the top rated of all four, and sees Meltzer hand out the rare (but nowhere near as rare as it used to be) sixth full star. Last week's 5-Star match saw Will Ospreay defeat Zack Sabre Jr in the second round of the New Japan Cup. Ospreay proceeded on through two more opponents to reach the final, where he faced off in a second tournament final against Shingo Takagi, their Best of the Super Juniors 2019 final being that year's Wrestling Observer Match of the Year. Those are some pretty big boots to fill. In under ten minutes, Samoa Joe and Necro Butcher helped merge and reinvent, the indy wrestling scene by combining the world of technical and strike based serious wrestling with that of the world of garbage, weapons filled brawls. Perhaps if this match hadn't happened, a PPV in 2021 wouldn't have had an exploding barbed wire match be the main event.
