The meaning of the word croatoan is a mystery, but interestingly enough the missing colony at Roanoke is not the only place in history it has shown up. Croatoan somehow seems to be related to disappearances, as in almost all cases something or someone has vanished. The word has been found at the scene of some famous deaths and mysterious disappearance, including those of Edgar Allan Poe, Black Bart, Ambrose Bierce and Amelia Earhart.
