Captain Phillips, or adult Home Alone, is an edge of your seat tense movie that is grounded by its performances by Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi as well as the excellent pacing set by the film editors. It may have become of a meme, but we all felt it down in our bones when Abdi said "I am the Captain now." Tom Hanks' performances at the end of the film is some of his best work. The drum heavy score in this film set the pace for a whirlwind 2 hour film. The technical side of the movie was rightly awarded; the camera work was phenomenal. The energy of this movie leaps off the screen. It balances a quiet contemplative, and introspective performance from Miles Teller and brash, cunning and extreme performance from J.K. Simmons. What could easily be described as a run of the mill biopic is elevated by Eddie Redmayne's performance as Stephen Hawking. However this biopic is not so much about the work of Hawking, but more so a look into his marriage. Selma is a portrait of a man in a country that refuses to take a step forward towards equality. Mank is the story about how Citizen Kane, one of the greatest movies ever made was written. (Go listen to our episode about Citizen Kane!) While plot may not be the most exciting, technically Mank is outstanding. It is a modern made movie, but completely feels like it was made in late 1930, early 1940's.
