  • Episode 017: Fox

    07/06/2019 Duración: 01h04min

Thanks for joining us! This month we’re discussing Fox by Margaret Sweatman WITH Margaret Sweatman! Laid over the backdrop of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, Fox examines several characters as they face the time’s social upheaval through a postmodern pastiche of newspaper headlines, diary entries, character vignettes and poems.  Its narrative thread is mostly through four characters: Mary, who enjoys her pampered lifestyle and is engaged to the socially charming businessman Drinkwater, Eleanor, who in spite of her families’ wealth, realizes that she has little to call her own and MacDougal, a local bookstore owner who fights for social reform. In This Episode We Mention Margaret Sweatman’s bio Broken Songs Band (Margaret’s band with her husband Glenn Buhr): The 1919 Winnipeg General Strike Private Property by Margaret Sweatman Jordon Wheeler and Digital Ogichida Fox Confessor Brings the Flood by Neko Case. Track — Margaret Vs. Pauline   Can You Tell Me A Book I Would Also Like? Margaret: Deborah Levy’s book

  • Episode 014: The Namesake

    01/03/2019 Duración: 58min

Thank you for joining us for our discussion of The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli are simultaneously navigating a new relationship, a new marriage, a new life, and a new country and merge their traditions with the American ones in which they raise their children. Their son Gogol, named after the Russian writer, knows only that he feels the burden of expectation as well as his odd name. He stumbles along the first-generation path, with conflicting loyalties, comic detours, and wrenching love affairs. Exploring identity, the claims of family, and the defining power of the name bestowed upon us by our parents, but also the means by which we slowly, sometimes painfully, come to define ourselves. In This Episode We Mention Teach Yourself Italian by Jhumpa Lahiri Short stories – Just Lather, That’s All by Hernando Téllez; Skin and Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl; The Screaming Woman by Ray Bradbury, Araby by James Joyce, The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe Tales at Night: Library Ha

  • Episode 013: Washington Black

    01/02/2019 Duración: 48min

Thank you for joining us this month for our discussion of Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. Many many thanks to guest hosts Alexa Potashnik and Sappfyre McLeod from Black Space Winnipeg! George Washington Black is a young field slave born on a Barbados sugar plantation. When his master’s eccentric brother chooses him as manservant, Wash is terrified of the cruelties he is certain await him. But Christopher Wilde, or “Titch,” is a naturalist, explorer, scientist, inventor, and abolitionist. He initiates Wash into a world of technology and science, where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky; where two people, separated by circumstances of birth, might begin to see each other as human. When a bounty is placed on Wash’s head, Titch and Wash escape in a fable-like flight along the eastern coast of America, and, finally, to a remote outpost in the Arctic. There Wash, left suddenly on his own, must invent himself anew and is again adrift across the globe. (Blurb adapted from goodreads.com) In This Episode

  • Episode 012: Beartown

    04/01/2019 Duración: 01h01min

Thank you for joining us this month for our discussion of Beartown by Fredrik Backman. Beartown is a town in need of a win, and their best hope is an incredibly talented high-school boy and a well-coached junior ice hockey team. All the hopes and dreams for the town’s revival rest on the results of one national semi-final. The match is the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Repercussions ripple through all of Beartown, leaving no-one unaffected. We see the consequences of tunnel vision, misplaced pride, and naked ambition; of toxic culture and the power of community to either lift its members up, or tear itself apart.  In this episode we mention Backman’s blog Save the Jets! Favourite sports movies! (Including League of Their Own, Draft Day, and Miracle) Kevin Costner Human nature Chimpanzees and Bonobos and us Pardon by Carol Shields from short story collection Various Miracles (Note: It was referred to as Apology on the episode) The Intro to Podcasting
