38 - Youth Sector and Queen Zee at Sebright Arms
28/04/2018 Duración: 17minThese bands were completely unknown to me until maybe two hours before these interviews happened. They are both more than worthy of your attention. Youth Sector left a dizzying list of bands to check out, so here is my attempt to transcribe what they said: HAKE | STRANGER GIRL | SAFE TO SWIM | MAI HIGH(?) | SUMANJI(?) And, in a first for this podcast, I've included some audio from the Queen Zee show. In particular, a very touching retelling of the first gig Queen Zee went to as a youth. I'm still cringing slightly about the questions I asked them (though maybe I'm being too hard on myself. I don't know), but this snippet of their show gives a better glimpse of the heart that they put into their performance. Thank you to Youth Sector and Queen Zee for their great shows and for talking to me. You can find more of their music at the following: YOUTH SECTOR Facebook: -- https://en-gb.facebook.com/youthsectorband/ -- Soundcloud: -- https://soundcloud.com/youthsectorband -- Spotify: -- https://open.spotify.com/arti

37 - You can skip this one
26/04/2018 Duración: 09minMove along, nothing to see here. I thought I could get this uploaded before midnight but failed. Once I missed the deadline I realized how weak this episode was; especially the "music" I've put on the end which is a 20 second voice recording done on a very cheap mp3 player from 2008. I recorded this episode on the walk back from the gig I attended - and I'll tell you more about that gig on the next episode. I was feeling a little low before I left for the show, and then I was kicking myself as I returned home. If you want to hear all about that, then by all means press play. Otherwise, no hard feelings. We'll just sweep this one under the rug. Thanks for listening. 36 | Open Mic 5 - Lottie and Toby talk Blue Arcade
25/04/2018 Duración: 12minBlue Arcade, that's the name, that name again, is Blue Arcade. Today's episode is a chat with Lottie - one half of the group Blue Arcade - and Toby - close friend and fan of the group. This was an interesting look at how the enthusiasm found at the early stages of making music, can often leave you lost for words. But Lottie is very good at describing the music they make in other ways. Plus she, along with her fellow musician Tom, make a most excellent noise, and I am very glad that I got to hear it. You can hear it too, in rough demo form as she described, at -- https://soundcloud.com/blue-arcade -- . And you can see the faces behind the music at -- https://www.instagram.com/bluearcademusic/ -- . Also Lottie seemed very keen to have everyone listen to Homeshake. If this is who she meant, then this is where you can find them: -- https://soundcloud.com/homeshake -- Thank you Lottie and Toby (and Tom!). Thanks for listening. 35 - Playing Live vol 1
24/04/2018 Duración: 07minKeeping it brief today, this episode is about my attempt to play live. Right now my live show consists of me playing guitar and singing while a backing track fills in the rest of the blanks. So today you'll hear the roughest iteration of how that sounds. Ably assisted by my very old PC (at some point it cuts out for a second then joins back in, just like a real live band), and featuring some experiments with singing lower and higher registers to see what sounds better, I give you the first "digital live performance rehearsal" (no, me neither. I'm just saying words at this point.) by Loads Of Japanese Bands. Thanks for listening. 34 - Playing with Peyote
23/04/2018 Duración: 18minGeorge and Joe are two very talented performers. Together they form the band Peyote. After joining them for their performance at an open mic, they invited me to join them for a rehearsal at The Engine Rooms rehearsal space, so that's what you'll hear on this episode. First we jam our way through some blues (well, they jam on guitar and I do my best to keep up on the drums) and then we have a little chat about the nature of songwriting and playing together. And then we get politely kicked out by the staff at The Engine Rooms. Thank you George and Joe for having me along for this jam session, it was a lot of fun and I hope we get to do it again. You can find more of their stuff at: Youtube -- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoBgKIEntCSKgoF7ucc0erg -- Instagram -- https://www.instagram.com/peyoteofficial/ -- And you can see more of The Engine Rooms Rehearsal Studios at -- https://www.engineroomsstudios.com/ -- Thanks for listening. 33 - Open Mic 4 - Early to Allsop
22/04/2018 Duración: 12minAfter arriving early for the Saturday night open mic at Allsop Arms, I decided to have a chat with some of the other performers that arrived early, so that's what you'll hear today. Joining me in the "conversation circle" are: Michael Gough -- https://soundcloud.com/user-961520365 -- Chris Afrix -- https://soundcloud.com/chrisafrix -- Dread Fury -- https://soundcloud.com/dread-fury -- Steve -- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa_84cTjGnfmtt85C-S5lNw -- Niraj - only available in person -- Thank you to these fine folks for joining me for a chat, and be sure to give their music a listen via the links above. 32 - To Get There, Together
21/04/2018 Duración: 13minNow that I've got a month of episodes under my belt, it feels like a good time to take stock of what I want to achieve next. This episode is me putting my mental to-do list out there in the hopes that it will help me to make it happen. Thank you to everyone who has come with me this far. If I'm going to take this to infinity and beyond, then this episode is my attempt at drawing a map to get there, together. Thanks for listening. 31 - Stairway To Kevin on Denmark Street
20/04/2018 Duración: 16minMy very old bass guitar is long overdue a repair, so this episode features Kevin and Gary of Stairway To Kevin: an instrument repair shop on Denmark Street. While I was there I recorded a quick chat with them about their history with this place, and just what it was that needed repairing on my bass. Thanks Kevin and Gary, and I guess I'll be seeing you again in about a week. I'm looking forward to it. My bank account is not. I also talk about a few things I've found on the internet that have piqued my interest. Mostly podcasts, as I am a podcast fiend. 30 - Santiago and Feven are my change of plans
19/04/2018 Duración: 25minNothing I recorded in this episode was as planned, but I honestly wouldn't have it any other way. The first conversation was had at The Reliance pub with Bridge The Moon Productions and the crew of the short film Deception. 29 - I Pressed Send
18/04/2018 Duración: 26minThat's exactly what I did, starting with DMs. The goal is to fill my calendar with appointments of me talking to people for the podcast, and today I took the first - and often scariest - step of reaching out. If all goes well in the near future you'll hear me talking to: Peyote -- https://www.instagram.com/peyoteofficial -- Novacub -- https://www.instagram.com/novacubmusic -- Alex of Black Malt -- https://www.instagram.com/black_malt -- Photographer Chloe Sheppard -- https://www.instagram.com/eolhcsheppard -- Writer Fiona Sinead -- https://www.instagram.com/fiona.sinead -- Podcast host Dillon -- https://www.twitter.com/Freeyourradio -- And many more. 28 - Riffs on Riffs on Riffs
17/04/2018 Duración: 06minThis one was done in a rush (aren't they all). This is both a humble ode to the bands of the 2000s that made me want to play guitar, and a showcase of just how bad I am at playing the guitar. Shout out also to the books Meet Me In The Bathroom by Lizzy Goodman and Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. Those two books are well worth a read. This episode, maybe less so. 27 - Her name is Kristen Anderson-Lopez
16/04/2018 Duración: 09minAt some point in this episode I mention the play Avenue Q and the songwriter Robert Lopez, and then I forgot the name of his wife and songwriting partner. Now I won't forget it. This is a quieter episode, just me thinking my thoughts about milestones in life and the diminishing returns of comparing yourself to others. I also mention the Sodajerker podcast ( -- https://www.sodajerker.com -- ), particularly their interview with Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez ( -- https://www.sodajerker.com/episode-82-kristen-anderson-lopez-and-robert-lopez/ -- ), which is well worth a listen. And though it might not sound like it here, I am truly happy for those close to me who have recently had some very good news. And I wish the Daniels (Radcliffe and Kaluuya) all the best. 25 - Live at The Apple Tree for the last time
14/04/2018 Duración: 18minThis episode features a live performance with myself and the oft-mention Romeo Crow! Friday 13th was our last open mic night at The Apple Tree pub, so what I have here is a recording of Romeo on guitar and vocals, and me on drums and back-up vocals, closing out the night. Thank you to everyone who showed up last night to make it memorable, thanks to Romeo for letting me play with you, and thank you to anyone who listens. 24 - Hello Panorama City, CA!
13/04/2018 Duración: 16minThrowing out some sincere Thank Yous to whoever is listening from wherever you are around the world. Soundcloud tells me the city that has listened the most is Panorama City in California, so whoever is listening from out there, this episode title is for you. If you are that listener (or listeners) from Panorama City, or Strasbourg in France, or Jakarta in Indonesia, or Wood Green/Birmingham/Hornsey in the UK, do feel free to say hello. It would be nice to put a (digital) face to the name. But nonetheless, thank you for listening. Also I end today's episode with two versions of the same song, which is still a work-in-progress. 23 - Open Mic vol. 2 with Nick and Mark at Anise Bar
12/04/2018 Duración: 10minToday's episode was recorded at the the open mic at Anise Bar. I spoke to Nick and Mark about the music they make and the music that Nick was about to perform, including some nods to The Darkness and Fleetwood Mac. And then I play a little something that nods a little in the Fleetwood Mac direction - at least in my mind it does. Thanks Nick, thanks Mark, and you can find me at Anise Bar most Wednesdays for the open mic there from 7pm. Thanks for listening. 22 - Open Mic vol. 1 with James, Louis, Diana, and Geraud at The Reliance Pub
11/04/2018 Duración: 09minThe four people I talk to in this episode were the four people kind enough to stick around and hear me play at the end of Tuesday's open mic. So I figured the least I could do was record a chat with them. And also you can hear me attempt to learn to play Don't Fear The Reaper as well as attempt to sing like Matt Berninger from The National. Thank you to James, Louis, Diana, and Geraud.
