  • Matt Waldman’s RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: Zone Route Running Concepts with WR Josh Downs (UNC)

    01/11/2022

Matt Waldman defines the basic concepts of route running against zone coverage in this edition of the RSP NFL Scouting Glossary with the help of a play from North Carolina NFL Draft Prospect, WR Josh Downs. Zone Routes Are A Different Animal Most conversations about route-running are devoted to beating defenders playing one-on-one against a receiver. Zone coverage is a significant part of defensive football and there's more to it than simply finding an open spot. Receivers have to see the coverage the same as their quarterback. They also have to understand how to manipulate the position of defenders to create open spots, maximize the potential space within that open area, and communicate in a timely and accurate manner to the quarterback that they are open and ready for the football. The Basic Techniques of Zone Routes Scanning the Field. Identifying the potential coverage triangles of defenders that will factor into the route. Identifying the defender in the second level of the field: A shallow

  • The Kadarius Toney Trade: A Scouting Perspective

    27/10/2022

Matt Waldman's RSP examines the pending deal between the Giants and Chiefs involving mercurial wide receiver Kadarius Toney. The Kadarius Toney Trade Is A Potential Win-Win-Win Note: You can also listen to these and additional thoughts by opting for the podcast at the bottom of the page.  I think the Kadarius Toney deal is a good trade. Giants' Head Coach Brian Daboll inherited immature players at the wide receiver position in Toney and Kenny Golladay. Immaturity is seen as a negative and it can be. But in this case, it's more about youth, lack of perspective, and/or these players being unintentionally enabled to think they are better than they are. Fred Taylor was a dynamic and immature talent early in his career. I actually used much of the behind-the-scenes details an NFL personnel employee shared with me about Taylor to formulate this RSP Writer's Project exercise nearly a decade ago. Taylor grew out of his behavior and became a locker-room stalwart. I have to believe that when Daboll took the Giants

  • Matt Waldman’s RSP Scouting Glossary: Stalk Blocking Basics with Charlotte WR Grant DuBose

    25/10/2022

Matt Waldman defines the basics of Stalk Blocking in this edition of the RSP NFL Scouting Glossary with the help of a play from Charlotte NFL Draft Prospect, WR Grant DuBose. What Is Stalk Blocking? When the blocking assignment calls for an offensive player detached from the formation to work toward a defender to execute the block, this is a stalk block. This method involves the receiver being the aggressor/initiator of the interaction without manipulating the defender into believing that he's running a route. The Basic Techniques of Stalk Blocking Break down in the Contact Zone. The Contact Zone is within two yards of the defender. Breaking down involves these components: A square stance: The hips and pads pointed squarely at the opponent. The feet are placed at shoulder width to generate a solid base/anchoring point during contact. The knees and hips are bent in an athletic position to solidify the base/anchoring/leverage. Maintaining the wide base by shuffling the feet. Take the ai

    19/10/2022

Montreal Alouettes’ head of scouting Russ Lande and the RSP’s Matt Waldman go position-by-position and discuss productive NFL players who fit or don't fit our desired archetypes at each position. That's the topic of this week's scout talk with Montreal Alouettes U.S. Head of Scouting Russ Lande and Rookie Scouting Portfolio author Matt Waldman. They go position-by-position, discussing the traits and skills that will gain or lose value for them when considering what they value at each position. This is the first of a two-part conversation on this topic that will eventually cover most of the positions. This week: Why Kyler Murray's game, a good young passer, goes against our type of desired player relative to Lamar Jackson or even less productive players like Davis Mills, Geno Smith, and Derek Carr. We appreciate Mike Williams and Kadariu

  • RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: Clapping or Gator Catching

    18/10/2022

Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary defines Clapping/Gator Catching, a sub-optimal technique with hand positioning for wide receivers.  Why Is Hand Positioning Vital for Receiver Play? The shape, spin, trajectory, and velocity of a thrown football require a pass catcher to attack the target with methods that allow the receiver an opportunity to achieve several objectives. Meet the ball at the earliest point of arrival. Slow the spin of the ball in a controlled manner that reduces the potential for a violent recoil. Make the catch with the first attempt to maximize efficiency. Optimal hand positioning creates easier second-chance attempts to win the ball. Secure the target quickly enough to reposition the ball away from tight coverage. Secure the target quickly enough to maintain the path of the route and maximize yardage after the catch. A football travels at a high speed and the spin isn't always tight. Combined with the oblong shape and texture, there are several challenges for a player

  • Matt Waldman’s RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: Stem Manipulation with WR Tyler Harrell

    11/10/2022

Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary covers the route-running concept of stem manipulation with the help of a Tyler Harrell post route. Three Methods of Stem Manipulation Playground-style moves on moves that make defenders look silly are fun to watch. They even launch careers on Instagram and TikTok. But for most routes, manipulating a defender is a far more efficient process. It has to be. As creative as these slick moves stacked in succession can be, there's a limited setting for where they work. When the quarterback is at the top of his drop, he expects his receiver to be at that the right spot at the right time. Relying too much on these moves can make a receiver late to his spot. When this doesn't happen, it can wreck a play and even ruin a drive. There are three efficient ways wide receivers attack defenders with the route phase leading up to the break (the stem): Running at the defender. Diving the stem inside the defender. Widening the stem outside the defender. Good route runners are
