13/08/2021 Duración: 42minThis conversation with Leeana Tankersley kicks off a series of BONUS author episodes coming through the fall. Hope Anyway is Leeana Tankersley’s sixth book, and it comes after Tankersley found herself sorting through immense grief following the unexpected end of her long marriage. Leeana Tankersley is funny and relatable and a great writer. I just loved our conversation that was full of vulnerable moments (me) and kind wisdom (her). Ep 129: What was the biggest year of your life? (A conversation with my roommate from 2001)
10/08/2021 Duración: 59minExactly 20 years ago, I was in the middle of the biggest year of my life. I graduated college, moved to Los Angeles, was grieving a devastating heartbreak, and the country was weeks away from the tragedy of 9/11. In this episode, I am asking YOU to think about the biggest year of your life. The answer may not be so obvious from the outside; it may not be the year you moved or married or had a baby or changed careers. The biggest year of your life may be full of loss or transformation, or both. Twenty years ago in 2001, I moved across the country with someone I barely knew. We rented an apartment together, figured out Los Angeles together, made friends together, and, eventually, worked on jackass the movie together (something that changed both of our lives). This is the first time I've ever shared a public conversation with my old friend and roommate Dr. Megan, even though I've been talking and writing about our time together for two decades now. * Mentioned in this episode: Ep 77: What's Your BIG Story? Ep 128: 10 Tips for Hosting Houseguests
03/08/2021 Duración: 55minReady to bust out the air mattresses? This episode is FULL of practical, logistical, and emotional tips for hosting people in your home. I'm sharing everything from the 4 things that keep (most) guests happy, to the mindset shifts that will keep you from being overwhelmed or resentful. Look, if there's one subject I can give many (many) words to, it's hosting houseguests. Since I moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago, I've hosted friends and family of all group sizes, from couch crashers in a tiny apartment to my entire extended family at our new home last month. Our lovely lake house has also been a revolving door of guests over the years, where I've become an expert at managing meals, airport pickups, activities, and downtime for families and groups. I know that having guests can be an absolute honor and also completely exhausting. I hope this episode gives you the tools to plan and the freedom from pressure the next time you're the host. Ep 127: "You read my journals?!" (A conversation with my Mom)
28/07/2021 Duración: 48minMy mom returns to the podcast with some new thoughts about how she feels having a daughter who shares herself on the internet, the advice she would give mid-life women, and a long ago conversation between us in the car when she realized there was something...strange...about me. I love to feature real conversations with friends and loved ones on this show. My mom is one of my favorite people, and I'm grateful she's willing to make these conversations public. This was a fun, sweet hour together and I encourage YOU to sit down with someone this week and have a meaningful chat. FULL SHOW NOTES HERE Sponsors: NOOM. Ep 126: Books we wish we'd written (A conversation with author Shawn Smucker)
20/07/2021 Duración: 55minThis conversation with my old friend Shawn Smucker is one of the best I've had in awhile. We talk about reading and ghost writing and self-publishing and (not) censoring what our kids read. And we also talk about the books we wish we'd written. Somehow I shock Shawn with one of my answers! Shawn Smucker is the author of six novels, including his latest The Weight of Memory (which I devoured in a day). Shawn calls The Weight of Memory "a modern day fairy tale." Ep 125: 10 Questions for Couples
13/07/2021 Duración: 52minThis episode is for you and someone else. These 10 Questions are meant for couples, but this isn't a big sit-down heart-to-heart. This is meant to be FUN. Stay open to your own answers and don't assume you know your partner's answers. Because the main point of these particular prompts is to build CONNECTION. The questions don't go too deep (in case you have a partner resistant to this type of conversation), but you should definitely come away from any discussion using these prompts feeling just a little bit closer. Most of the prompt episodes like 10 Questions for the End of the Year or 10 Questions to Ask Yourself in the Middle of Anything or 10 Questions To Mark One Year of the Pandemic are great for groups or families, but they also work well for your own introspection and journaling. THIS episode, though, this one is MEANT to be shared with someone else. And while I primarily had romantic couples in mind when I wrote the questions, they're definitely not lovey-dovey. If you don't have a partner, thes

Ep 121: Stephen King Starter Kit
15/06/2021 Duración: 53minStephen King is a genius and I believe we will one day study him in academic settings like we do other literary giants. (He's also my favorite author.) I'm making a case today for why YOU should read this master storyteller. He has created some of the most iconic characters and plot lines and imagery in history, but he gets a bad rap from casual readers because his most popular work is horror. But horror as a genre might not be what you think it is. I believe you can handle it, or at least some of it. And I don't think readers should dismiss such an important author just because his work is deemed "scary." In this episode we talk about: Why Stephen King matters His brief biography What stands out about his writing and his stories My personal favorites Where you should start CLICK TO SIGN UP FOR Stephen King SUMMER BOOK CLUB Join us in reading Carrie by Stephen King over on my private podcast SECRET STUFF where I'm hosting Stephen King Summer. Ep 117: 10 Financial Tips for Freelancers (with The Freelance CFO Katelyn Magnuson)
18/05/2021 Duración: 01h10minOne of the things we’ve never discussed on this show is MONEY. Even though I know it’s one of the topics that we wish people spoke more openly about. A lot of us are flying pretty blind in our money situation. Are we making enough? Are we saving enough? Are we spending or investing it right? How much money could I *actually* make if I started a side hustle? A year of the pandemic has made a lot people rethink their careers, and there’s a lot of interest in going full time freelance, pursuing a passion, or monetizing a creative pursuit. My guest for this episode is Katelyn Magnuson, aka The Freelance CFO, and she’s here to give us 10 Tips for Going Freelance. We start with some basics, but i’ve been in the freelance game for over a decade, and I still learned a lot in this conversation. Ep 116: Selfie Shame
11/05/2021 Duración: 51minNow THIS is a topic I've been wanting to cover for a long time. Because whenever I do a social media challenge (like the currently running #OneDayMay) and I encourage people to post a selfie (as I often do), I scroll through tons of posts where women are APOLOGIZING for their self-portrait in the caption. There are many reasons both personal and cultural that we feel extra vulnerable about taking and sharing selfies on social media, but in this episode I’m talking about the three most common reasons I see: We’re unhappy with the way we look We feel like selfies are indulgent, narcissistic, and annoying We don’t mind being in photos, but we wish someone else was taking them I look at selfies from all kinds of angles in this episode, hoping that it leads away from selfie shame and into selfie empowerment. But I also want to talk about why we judge other people’s selfies, and my unpopular opinion about oversharing. FULL SHOW NOTES HERE. SPONSORS: Rothys. BONUS: Competitive Grieving (A conversation with author Nora Zelevansky)
08/05/2021 Duración: 47minAuthor Nora Zelevansky is my the very first novelist I've ever had on 10 Things To Tell You! We're discussing her new book (out May 11) Competitive Grieving, a darkly comic novel about the dynamics of friendship following loss. Competitive Grieving is inspired by true events in Nora's life, and we talk about the themes and and relatability of her fictionalized version. Nora was one of the first friends I ever made in Los Angeles, and she's also one of the co-founders of the original book club I talk about so often. We have been friends, confidants, and cheerleaders for one another for almost two decades and I am so happy to welcome her to the show. Ep 115: Taking up space (with Kate Kennedy of Be There in Five)
04/05/2021 Duración: 54minWhen I first found Kate Kennedy's podcast Be There in Five, I just wanted Taylor Swift analysis. But I stayed for her series on Mommy Bloggers. Then I couldn't get enough of her pop culture commentary, hilarious tangents, and well-researched episodes about everything I wanted to talk about (that other people weren't talking about). I also texted every podcast friend I have to ask, "Have you seen what Kate Kennedy is doing?" Because her show was defying all the rules. Be There in Five's episodes are often 2+ hours long, and mostly solo. It was empowering to watch a woman unapologetically take up so much space with her words and ideas and air time. AND be smart and funny on top of it. So I was beyond excited to have this conversation with Kate about leaning into your skillset, finding your own personal "football game," and what "being authentic" means when you're one person online and another with your family.
