Love Listens - How to Listen Well to Those we Love
09/02/2022 Duración: 17minTelecare Crisis & Caring Line is hosting “Love Listens” February 17, 7:00 p.m.--a virtual event focused on active empathetic listening for better relationships. While the event takes place during the week of Valentine’s Day, it applies to all close relationships. Telecare is a faith-based registered charity based out of Abbotsford where trained volunteers use empathetic listening to support callers who are often in estranged relationships. “As media studies show, our digital technologies permit us to communicate with many, thinly, and more and more the same way when we are face-to-face,” states Bill Strom, Telecare’s executive director and the event speaker. Evidence of this is the global downward trend in empathy – the ability to see and feel from another person’s perspective—and fewer close friends’—now just 1.9 on average. The event presents three ways we can approach relationships and how good and poor listening habits spill from each. Attendees will also consider barriers that create shallow listening

Bringing in the New Year with Silence
08/01/2022 Duración: 09minThis is the time of year where people reflect and project about the kind of upcoming year that they want to have. And as I think about this upcoming year, what keeps surfacing for me is that I'm being drawn to spend more time practicing silence. I have to admit that I’m not super excited about practicing silence more. There are a lot more fun things to do! At the same time, I know it will be good for me. Silence is a practice that will change how I show up in the world. Whenever I have consistently practiced silence in the past it has always brought about more peace in my life. As I practice silence this year I also anticipate being more present, and open to others and reality. The practice of silence isn’t limited to the absence of sound. It can also be experienced as emptiness, awareness, nothingness, formlessness, and spaciousness. [1] Also, I sometimes experience silence as stillness, just being, and as a gap or a void. Do you want to be happy or do you want to be right?
17/12/2021 Duración: 10minHappiness (like love) is a choice! Today. I want to invite you to consider the question. Do you want to be happy? Or do you want to be right? I remember being asked years ago by the facilitator at a personal growth seminar, “would you rather be right, or would you rather be happy?” I find that question to be as pertinent today as it was back then because I still want to be right at times, even when it might unconsciously hurt a relationship.
