This intrepid Author invites his friends and occasional collaborators to join him at a “stimulating” symposium in New Orleans where attendees plan to discuss their work on the dark recesses of human ideology and behavior. This eccentric summit held in the French Quarter offers intriguing promise to seasoned investigators and tantalizes the uninitiated, not to mention guarantees a great deal of after-hours revelry. When investigators arrive at the luxurious lodging arranged by the Author the day before the symposium is scheduled to begin, they discover both the Author and their host, Count Cazenave, have gone missing. Though they receive a warm greeting from the house staff, investigators learn that neither their friend nor the host ever returned since leaving for a social engagement the prior evening.

John Baltisberger is an author of speculative and genre fiction that often focuses on Jewish Elements. "Mister Nash," he says, "we are in danger. There is a Strike Team in the area." Opening a visual to Nash, Trae taps his wrist to indicate the six violet blades of his tattoo. The drone slowly descends below the treeline. There's a very tense minute while nothing happens. Reggie decides to tries astral-projecting himself out to do some recon. A little transparent ghostly image of Baby Reggie moves out into the surrounding forest, searching for this alleged strike team, and finding nothing but the sleek black drone. It's flashing a digital pattern on its external screen: SKULL SKULL HALO. Reggies snaps back to his body in the jar and tells Trae what he's seen. After a day they reach her bug-out spot, and decide to take rest there for the night while they discuss their options. Ulla knows that taking them to Union City will raise all sorts of eyebrows and their fate would be uncertain, even though the UBI would ensure they would not starve. Trae points out that the group is much slower and easier to track if the kids stay with them (a point which Ulla and Nash are quick to stifle). Chiyan wants to go to Union City, while Dain would prefer to stay with the group. As his little body trembles with effort, he sees Whisper being herded into another room with a bunch of other children, all between the ages of 5-12. They are being equipped with flashlight helmets and tools for digging. They are a labor force. Suddenly Whisper turns around and looks straight back at him, eyes wide in shocked surprise -- and then the connection is cut. Reggie tells everyone what he saw. The weird thing was being seen: Reggie has projected himself many times before, but no one has ever noticed him before -- with the notable exception of The Frank. Tonight was our session 0 for our new Runner campaign. Runners was designed by Jesse Pyne and uses the CORE RPG System, created by Tod Foley. Runners is set in the near-ish future after the onset of nuclear war. There are still pockets of humanity that have managed to survive and even thrive in this new world. Ulla comes clean and tells them about the experimental implants in her head. She was "designed," she explains, to function as a first-generation cyber-assassin for Wolfram. The system in her head is worth billions. She actually performed several missions for them -- including one that took out an important lieutenant of their enemy "The Fate Broker" and his army of "whisperer" informants -- but eventually she grew tired of their mistreatment and fled. They continue walking eastward, talking as they go. Ulla and Nash clean their wounds, and everybody takes turn on watch while getting some sleep. While on watch, Nash cleans the weapons and mounts Erstlinger's gun on the base of Reggie's jar. Trae uses his watch shift to mess with the "Fred" killbot. He manages to get it online again, but without proper electronics equipment, his fix probably won't last long. Later that afternoon they take off into the badlands heading east by southeast (the direction Erstlinger had pointed). Reggie and Nash are discussing the difference between reality and memories when a vortex suddenly opens up ahead, and sitting at its edge is a military-drab 2-liter canister with a row of red blinking lights on top.
