Dreamhouse | Message Of The Week

In this service we read the whole of Matthew 18:1–20 asking what those famous words about confronting a brother or sister are actually for. Jesus spends seventeen verses on disciplining ourselves before he says one word about confronting anyone else. These aren't church rules. This is what a community looks like when following a King whose glory and suffering are for serving people. Here, Jesus affirms littleness rather than innocence. He gives stern warnings to the seriousness of harming one of these little ones. He is the shepherd who counts a hundred and asks where the one is. Elijah is so worn out he asks God to let him die. God doesn't question him first, but feeds him without requiring Elijah to explain. This Sunday sits with that same rhythm found throughout Matthew 14, Jesus draws away to pray alone on the hillside while his disciples are sent out onto a storm-tossed sea, and when Peter's courage gives out and he starts to sink, Jesus doesn't correct him first, he grabs him. When Jesus in his grief over the death of John the Baptist meets a crowd of five thousand, he doesn't retreat. Matthew’s gospel tells us that he has compassion on them. Where the disciples just see the impossible, he invites them into something greater. "You feed them." Drawing on N.T. Wright's sense of vocation and Pope Benedict XVI's writing on public faith, this sermon on Matthew's feeding of the five thousand asks what it means to bring what little we have — five loaves, two fish, our own exhaustion — into the hands of the One who blesses it, breaks it, and hands it back to a hungry world through ordinary people. For the disciples, "you feed them" was about bread.
