Most of us eventually get there: that point in life when we quit dreaming, quit exploring, and quit pushing our comfort zones. We settle into a routine, tolerate things we could change, and draw the boundaries that define our life. But what happens when God interrupts the routine, challenges you to try something new, and calls you to a new life with new dreams? Do you follow or do you settle?

Who is the ultimate source of authority in your life? There are a lot of options: your opinion, Facebook, politics, friends, family, pragmatics, etc. Your ultimate source of authority reveals the object of your worship. Many desire to be free, but instead find themselves trapped, because they are worshiping the wrong things. But the message of Jesus brings power and truth to overcome the bondage of evil. He wants you to find freedom in His authority. Text: Luke 4:31-44

Meet Zechariah and Elizabeth: relatives to Mary and unbeknownst to them part of the royal family. Their’s is a story of waiting: waiting for Zechariah’s big career moment to arrive; waiting for Elizabeth’s dream of being a mother to be fulfilled. Waiting and hope are often linked in life and Scripture, and in God’s timing when hope is fulfilled it’s often a bit different than what you had expected. But God’s fulfillment is always superior to anything we could have imagined.

Esther was a national celebrity. Admired for her great beauty and charm, she was living a soft life of luxury and wealth, when her moment-in-time unexpectedly invaded her life. The beauty queen found herself staring into the eyes of evil and the impending genocide of her people. It was then, Esther discovered that her story was actually God’s story, and she became so much more than just a pretty face; she became a godly woman of valor and strength.

In the midst of adversity, there is always opportunity. As a young-man, Daniel found himself separated from everything he’d ever known living in a foreign land. With adversity on every side, Daniel discovered that seizing the opportunity in adversity requires us to find the courage to trust God for new beginnings.

Culture changes on a regular basis and will continue to do so, our response to it speaks to who we are and what we believe. We have an example of how culture changed and how 3 young men responded in Daniel chapter 3.

Time: it’s one thing you will never have in surplus until you reach heaven. We only have a limited number of days to use our lives to honor God, enjoy our families, and impact our world. If you only had five years to make an impact, how would you live? Moses’ mother, Jochebed, faced danger on all sides. Her dream was diminished and her time limited, but she found the opportunities in her adversity and in five years time made an impact that can still be felt today. Join us this Sunday as we continue our series The Opportunity of Adversity with a sermon entitled “In Five Years Time.”

In the midst of adversity there is always opportunity. God’s plan exceeds what we perceive. Beyond what you can control or see, God is always at work drawing people to Himself and to others. In the midst of adversity, there is always opportunity. As we clean up from the recent hailstorms it has been inspiring to see Murphy Church loving one another and loving others. Boarding windows, sweeping glass, opening doors, preparing food, giving dollars, lifting prayers, and sharing hugs: "this is church.” Adversity also brings with it questions about God and suffering. This week we begin a a new series of messages entitled the Opportunity of Adversity with a sermon from Romans 8 entitled Living on the Fallen Side of Eternity.
