Ben Kraus - Bridge Road Brewers
22/12/2020 Duración: 49minThis week we catch up with Ben Kraus, currently in quarantine in Adelaide after recently returning with his family from Austria, much later than he'd hoped. We hear about the challenges he faced getting back to Australia as well as his experiences of Covid in Austria. Ben also spent the last 3 months fairly productively, commissioning and starting a new brewery in Austria and we take a look at the craft beer trends that he saw there as well as what he has noticed of the changing beer landscape here. There is talk of a new lager Bridge Road has recently introduced, having discontinued its chestnut pilsner and of course we discuss why pilsners don't get the love that some of us think they deserve. Enjoy the conversation. Our partners Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt. James Brindley - Lion
08/12/2020 Duración: 40minThis week we speak with James Brindley, Managing Director of Lion Beer Australia. James started with Lion way back in 1994, just two years after the launch of XXXX Gold, which gives you some idea of the massive changes in the brewing scene which James has witnessed during his career. We wanted to look at how a large multi-national brewing business changes its business to adapt to the changing times, and especially how it adapts to the increasingly local focus of modern day beer drinkers. In another Radio Brews News scoop, we are privy to the announcement of two new local breweries being introduced by Lion. We are joined by Chuck Hahn during the interview to reveal one of these breweries. It's a conversation about the evolution of the beer market that includes the General Manager of Lion Beer admitting that he was wrong about one of Australia's fastest growing products. Scott Hargrave and Stirling Howland - Balter
01/12/2020 Duración: 57minThis week, what happens when your brewery is bought out as we catch up with Balter’s Scott Hargrave and Stirling Howland. This week marks the first anniversary since Balter’s sale to CUB. For some the announcement wasn’t a surprise. The prominence of the personalities behind the business seemed to create an expectation that an eventual sale was the obvious outcome. At the same time, with all of its advantages, Balter could have chosen a much easier path to that end. Instead Scott & Stirling and their team created beers that weren’t just good in quality terms, they were beers that I think could fairly be described as having integrity. They didn’t go after the low-hanging fruit in style terms, especially when you recall that the brand’s second release was an Alt Brown Ale. Never a huge crowd pleaser. The same could be said of the brand as well as the beers and the way it seemed to genuinely engage with consumers, rather than merely sell to them. Even so, or perhaps because of these things, the reaction to t

Adam Gibb - White Brick Brewing
17/11/2020 Duración: 52minThis week on Beer is a conversation we hear about what happens when your dream of owning a brewery doesn't go to plan. Passionate homebrewer Adam Gibb opened White Brick Brewing in North Lakes north of Brisbane in November 2017 and closed it in July this year at the height of the COVID lockdowns. While COVID was the nail in the coffin, as Adam learned, things don’t always go to plan and running a brewery is fraught with challenges. It’s always a hard conversation to speak to someone who’s dream hasn’t worked out, but as you’ll hear, despite how it ended, Adam has no regrets about his decision to have a go. We discuss Adam’s original plans for his own brewery and how that compared to what happened, what he learned and also what he would do differently. It’s an important conversation for anyone who dreams of opening a brewery to hear. Our partners Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt. Paul Brown - Deep Creek
03/11/2020 Duración: 56minThis week we head across the ditch to visit Deep Creek Brewing in Auckland. Deep Creek recently launched a series of collaborations with Australian brewers called the Lockdown Local Series. For a brewery that took out the small international brewery at the 2017 Australian International Beer Awards, we knew very little about its background or its approach, so Beer is a Conversation arranged `to catch up with Paul Brown, one half of the founding team, to learn more about how the pair of home brewers launched their brewpub in 2011 and built it into an exporting production brewery shipping beer to Australia as well as China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Scandinavia and the UK. John Holl - Beer Writer and Podcaster
20/10/2020 Duración: 58minThis week we Drink Beer and Think Beer, as we chat with US beer writer and podcaster John Holl. Regular listeners will know that the Brews News team are avid listeners of John’s podcasts, followers of his writings. It’s always great to just talk beer with him. This conversation was loosely prompted by a recent chat John had with Kim Sturdavent, who is credited as being the creator of the Brut IPA, a beer style that appeared, exploded and virtually disappeared, all in the space of 18 months. Kim shared some very interesting thoughts the rapid development and disappearance of a beer that while having a name, never really came to set as a style, at least in technical terms. We talk about that and through that lens how hype and consumer demand for novelty and hard seltzer are shaping beer style and development.
