Have you ever been told you could not do something? Have restrictions or barriers, whether intentional or not, ever excluded you from things or others? Have you ever been looked down upon or marginalized, because of the color of your skin, your gender, or social class? If so, you can place yourself in the story of the “Woman at the Well.” This Samaritan woman had at least 3 strikes against her according to her community. But Jesus chose to engage with this woman, even if it meant breaking down walls that separate, to tell her the good news. He, unlike others, does not forsake people like her. We, who are followers of Jesus, share Jesus’ mission to reach others with the gospel, which may force us to “Get Out There,” and, if required, to break down barriers like him. Jesus, when he was here on earth, had a mission. He made disciples so that they could continue to make more disciples. We, who follow Jesus, therefore should be “Getting Out There” to share about Jesus to others. For us to be effective, we should invite Jesus to come too. From John 2:1-11, when we invite Jesus to the party: 1. When problems or challenges happen, we can bring them to Jesus. (v. 3) 2. When Jesus is actively working, he will use us to serve alongside him in the work. (v. 7) 3. When Jesus shows his power and glory, we will enjoy that transformational power in us too. The Questions we dare not ask when it comes to caring for those in need: • What if I am too busy to help someone in need? • What if I don’t have the gift of compassion? • What if the person in need is not starving? (They have a TV at home!) • What if they are ungrateful and entitled? • What if they use their money to feed an addiction? • What if they are in a bad situation because of the poor decisions they made?
