The New England Patriots faced a series of uninspiring opponents to start the regular season, from the hapless Pittsburgh Steelers, to the even more hapless Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. The level of competition didn't improve through the first eight weeks of the year as embarrassing team after embarrassing team lined up to play the Patriots to get, well, embarrassed. Only one team that the Patriots played currently have a winning record (Buffalo Bills). That changes in week 9 as the Patriots embark on the meat of their regular season, with games against the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, and Kansas City Chiefs. In the second installment of Pulpit Playback Mark Schofield looks back at the Divisional Round game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens from the 2014-2015 season. While the Patriots entered the game with a 14-2 record and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, many were uneasy at the prospects of the Ravens - who were the sixth seed in the playoffs and needed a win in their final game just to get in - coming to town. After all, the Ravens had already beaten the Patriots in two playoffs games at Gillette Stadium. Could they do it again? The New England Patriots are an impressive 8-0 through the first eight weeks of the season. They rank 1st in points scored and 1st in points allowed. The only other team since the NFL merger to accomplish all three feats was the 1985 Chicago Bears, who went on to win the Super Bowl. Additionally, over 60% of teams that have started 8-0 post-merger have reached the Super Bowl. Over one in three have won the whole thing. So the Patriots are in great company from a historical standpoint. They have no peers from a contemporary view of the AFC. The New England Patriots crushed the New York Jets on Monday Night Football with a final score of 33-0, in a game that was even more lopsided than the score. The New England defense held the Jets offense to hilariously impotent levels of production, with the secondary doing a great job in particular. But perhaps the stars of the team have come from the revamped linebacker corps that could be the best unit of the Bill Belichick era. And while the Patriots offense hasn't been outstanding, they've still been good enough to get the job done as Tom Brady and company have overcome an understated number of injuries to remain productive.
