Sinopsis

Being an adult is hard. So is being a geek. And an adult geek? Well, that's where we come in. We're Beej and Void, and we've got more than a little experience in that area. We are life-long geeks and have managed to bring our geekery with us into adulthood and still be somewhat functional adults--you know, with families and jobs and that sort of thing. We don't do toxic, and we don't do nerdrage. Our views on geekdom are positive and optimistic, and we believe that the most important part of being a geek is the people you get to geek out with.Tightly focused discussions on specific topics drive the show. Striving to illustrate that it is entirely possible to be mega-geeks and responsible adults, we want to be your friend and create and open and positive geek community for everyone. We started this podcast because we really want there to be a safe, welcoming, positive geek community for everyone. We want to talk about stuff we love, make friends, and most importantly, make sure that everyone feels appreciated and that there's a place for them. So whether your love is video games, comic books, movies, TV, fitness, computers and tech, or whatever else...come geek out with us. Let's be friends.

  • S5E46 - PS5 Review - “It feels like a zipper”

    19/11/2020 Duración: 50min

In This Episode: This week Void and Beej do a full PS5 review based on our first week with the new console.  The guys have some radically different experiences and takeaways.  It’s an interesting launch to a new console generation. The main reason being that, as long-time listeners know, Beej and Void have completely different methods of playing video games, so their experiences with the PS5 and its features are equally different. The whole thing is a fantastic discussion, however, and both feel as though the console was worth buying at launch, despite some nits they pick.  Let us know what you think about the new console releases, too! Weekly Geekery For geekery, BJ is starting to read through Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, the new D&D sourcebook that just came out.  Void has mostly just been playing PS5 games but spends some extra time talking about Astro’s Playroom. 12/11/2020 Duración: 38min

In This Episode: This week Void and Beej discuss The Mandalorian Season 2 with the kickoff of the first two episodes and what they anticipate the rest of the season has in store.  There’s a lot to like here even though it’s still early on. Weekly Geekery For geekery, BJ spent bunches of time doing a variety of flavors of D&D with friends and family.  Void finished off Hades and wrapped up his goals in this season of Fortnite in anticipation of the new consoles and new AAA games coming out next week.  He also sampled the Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity demo and found it kind of wanting. • S5E44 - Watch Dogs: Legion - “6G Grandma”

    05/11/2020 Duración: 41min

In This Episode: This week Void and Beej talk about Watch Dogs: Legion and how it just feels out of step with where we are as a culture and a society.  Despite that, it’s a fascinating lens to look through at the world and at the AAA open world genre in general. Weekly Geekery For geekery, BJ is still into World of Warcraft and has made more leveling progress compared to last week.  He also got more time to play Dungeons & Dragons in a few different campaign settings.  Void has been revisiting the world of Frozen with Into the Unknown: Making Frozen II and by watching the new Olaf short, Once Upon a Snowman.  Void also finished up the latest two Dresden Files novels and enjoyed them a lot. • S5E43 - Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian - “The Volume is just a cool branding name”

    29/10/2020 Duración: 46min

In This Episode: This week Void and Beej talk about Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, especially the episode about the new technology that ILM and Unreal made for Disney to use in making The Mandalorian!  We’re getting really hyped for Season 2 to kick off so this was the perfect subject to get our heads back into The Mandalorian universe. Weekly Geekery For geekery, BJ is back into World of Warcraft and is finding a new community to play with regularly.  He also has been dipping back into D&D and has plans for campaigns and one-shots with friends.  BJ finished up Sabrina and loved the dark Halloweeny-ness of it.  Void tried out the Dungeons & Dragons board game with his kids, has Genshin Impact on farm mode, and has finished the first battle pass of his life due to the Marvel season of Fortnite Chapter 2. 15/10/2020 Duración: 25min

He also touches on Genshin impact but that’s a bigger story for next week once everyone is back. Sponsored by: We are sponsored this week by Funimation! • S5E39 - Super Mario 3D Retrospective - "The best game that no one should play"

    29/09/2020 Duración: 49min

We’ve been playing a bunch of 3D Mario games. Which makes sense because it's the 35th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros on NES all the way back in 1985. We even did an issue of PRESS START on Mario at https://patreon.com/geektogeekcast! Beej has been playing a TON of Mario games, not just 3D ones, either. But he finally beat Super Mario Odyssey and likes it a lot more than he did beforehand. Between Super Mario 3D Land and World, the level-based platforming is covered, the New Wii U Deluxe version is getting some Switch play, and then there's the brand new Super Mario 3D All-Stars that just released that everyone is playing and loving. He's playing that, too! Whew!  And Void is, too! He's focusing more on the Super Mario 3D All-Stars part of things, but really loves him some Super Mario Galaxy. Enough that he beat it on its own already. He wants Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Switch, and his thinking is that we're going to see it as DLC for the All-Stars collection. Wouldn't that awesome? What do

  • S5E38 - PS5 and Xbox Series X Pre-Order Hype - "What to play on day one?"

    24/09/2020 Duración: 45min

In This Episode: This week Void and Beej are buying into some of the next generation console hype around PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X… and questioning some of the hype too.  From pricing to pre-orders to what we pulled the trigger on, we discuss a little bit of all of it. Weekly Geekery For geekery, BJ finished up some comics on DC Universe, played Kirby Triple Deluxe, watched West World Season 3, and started reading Dune again.  Void actually finished an anime for the first time in a long time with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and he’s also been dabbling in Crusader Kings 3 on Game Pass for PC. • S5E37 - Action Game Shows - “Tom Hanks is good, for sure”

    17/09/2020 Duración: 32min

Action Game Shows are truly amazing. Whether we are kids watching Nickelodeon GUTS and Legends of the Hidden Temple, or we're adults binging Ninja Warrior and The Floor is Lava, these kinds of reality shows are never not fun to geek out about. What got us thinking about this was watching the Jedi Temple Challenge on YouTube. Think of it like a Star Wars-themed Legends of the Hidden Temple that's Hosted by Ahmed Best (formerly Jar Jar Binks, but now a Jedi Master!). He is joined by a snarky commentator droid, who might be one of the best droids this side of BB-8. It appears as though these characters are canon, too, so Ahmed has finally become something truly awesome in the Star Wars universe. We also talk a lot about the best ones from our childhoods, including Nick Arcade (watch it here: https://youtu.be/7ST-4I7EYVA), Double Dare (which Beej got to see live), Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS, American Gladiators, and more. Beej also talks about why the Japanese version of Ninja Warrior (Sasuke) is way bett

  • S5E36 - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered - "The first is most excellent"

    10/09/2020 Duración: 51min

In This Episode: The remastered edition of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles just  launched, and Void and I had planned on buying it and playing the heck  out of it for a long time. But as more announcements came out about how  it was being handled, the less likely we were to get it. We decided,  however, to try the Lite version (demo) that gave access to the first 3  dungeons in the game, and let anyone who connected to a full account  have full access. This is what we thought of it all. You can read the full notes here: https://geektogeekmedia.com/podcasts/geektogeekcast/s5e36-final-fantasy-crystal-chronicles-remastered/ Weekly Geekery For geekery, BJ has been watching Lovecraft Country and Bill and Ted movies while Void has been playing Soda Dungeon 2, , and more Spirit Farer.  He also got some new podcasts in the rotation like Triple Click, What the force, and Friends at the Table. • S5E35 - Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 & Recent Game Pass Games - "They don’t know where the birds are"

    03/09/2020 Duración: 41min

In This Episode: This week Void drags Beej into a conversation about Microsoft Flight Simulator.  Void has also been messing around with a bunch of new Game Pass games on Xbox and has some impressions. Weekly Geekery Void played a lot of Game Pass Games!  Beej has been checking out comics on Comixology Unlimited including Umbrella Academy, Batman Court of Owls, City of Owls, Death of the Family, and Birthright. • S5E34 - DC FanDome's Coolest Announcements - "I’m going to buy more comics now"

    27/08/2020 Duración: 49min

This week we talk DC FanDome and BJ’s surprise full day of watching it when he wasn’t planning on it.  Void watched all the trailers after the fact and has some thoughts on the video games that got announced.  Much hype ensues. Beej had planned on watching 1 or 2 sessions about Wonder Woman 1984, but ended up leaving it on all day, just streaming, and maybe missed an hour or two total, but it was so much fun. With the lack of pop culture news and how serious everything has been, it was so nice just to escape into comics and have good news and people loving stuff.  The top things that we talk about this wee are the new Gotham Knights video game and how it seems to change the Arkham games formula up, even though it's not a continuation of that series -- Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is actually in that universe. Weird, huh? The Batman trailer has us incredibly excited about what it will be like, and Beej just wishes they'd release Wonder Woman 1984 already. Because they're not even saying

  • S5E33 - MTG Jumpstart - "Oh yeah, I want the +1 unicorns"

    20/08/2020 Duración: 43min

In This Episode: This week we talk Magic: The Gathering Jumpstart, the completely new format that Void loves (link below). MTG Jumpstart is both an online format that Arena uses as special events, but also an in-person, physical format where players can buy booster packs of cards set to a particular theme. These packs have 20 different cards in them, that are (apparently) semi-random. Then, you choose a second theme, shuffle them together, and you have a surprisingly versatile and useful deck -- at least against other Jumpstart decks. We feel like the format could absolutely be wonderful in tournament form, and it's a great way to spice up home and friendly games, too. Grab a booster box and then go to town making fun themes like Treehugging Mermaids or Walled Lightning. Fun stuff.  Jumpstart really does seem to be a way for Magic: The Gathering to be more of an evergreen game without nearly the investment that keeps people from becoming long-term players. So yeah...we're excited about it. Void is very e

  • S5E32 - Fall Guys & Marvel Avengers - “We all fall down”

    13/08/2020 Duración: 45min

In This Episode: This week we talk about the recent release of Fall Guys and our experiences with the Marvel’s Avengers beta.  Fall Guys is the newest trend in battle royale gaming, only this time it's not a shooter. It's a floppy platformer! It's taken the world by storm, and the servers for this indie blockbuster were down for most of the weekend while they adjusted for the absurd demand for their title. It's free on PS+ for August 2020, so make sure you grab it if you're a member. The Marvel's Avengers beta is well under way now, too, giving players a first-hand look at Crystal Dynamics' take on the Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Beej likes it a lot, but Void isn't necessarily sold on it yet. The beta gave them Destiny 2 vibes, some Marvel Ultimate Alliance feels, and juuuuust a dash of PS4 Spider-man. So if any of that sounds good to you, you should absolutely check it out. In fact, you should check it out regardless. The open beta for the software is going to be coming across every weekend until it's rel

  • S5E31 - Recent Audiobook Recommendations and Reading Habits - "I’ll read this book on paper"

    06/08/2020 Duración: 52min

Reader and Patreon-supporter Colton Bliss won the poll to have his topic suggestion go live! So here we are! Colton suggested audiobook recommendations and reading geekery! Colton Bliss, Patreon SuperstarI also listen to a lot of audiobooks and I'm always looking for recommendations and love when I hear the recommendations you guys do give for books. I would love to hear more about what you guys are reading or even like a top 10 best audiobook recommendations, or something along those lines. This week we dive deep into our current approaches to reading in all forms.  We consume books in digital, physical, and audio formats these days so we wanted to really dig in on this topic. We talk about some of the best audiobooks we've read (listened to) recently, what made Beej pick up a physical copy of Snow Crash, instead of reading an ebook, and how in the world Void fell in love with cosmic horror. It's pretty cool. For geekery we touch on Legend of Korra, the Eiyuden Chronicle Kickstarter and the dev intervi
