There was once a monk who emptied himself so much that you could see the filling of God’s mighty power within his life. He is known as St. Benedict of Nursia. St. Benedict grew up in a wealthy family in Rome. He was very privileged, lacking nothing; he even had servants. However, there was something missing in his life. He was a believer, but he desired more of God. This led him to live a life of seclusion for three years. During this time, God filled him. However, he did not stay in seclusion! He is known for performing many great miracles. He raised people from the dead, cast out demons, and healed a boy of leprosy. Once, he prophesied to a king named Totila that he would die in ten years because of his wickedness, which was fulfilled. St. Benedict was so influential that he was seen as a threat to the church. They tried to assassinate him several times. Once they tried to poison him with a drink, but as he prayed over the drink, the cup shattered. We all have visions and dreams. However, sometimes in life, our vision may become broken, distorted, or even snatched away. Maybe our vision is gone because someone told us we don’t have the know-how or the resources to achieve or accomplish the task. Maybe we’ve given up on it because we feel insufficient, or maybe it is something impossible to the natural world. How can we realize our vision? How can we make the impossible possible? Or perhaps a better question is, how can we make evident that which appears impossible to the natural eye? Pharaoh sent for Joseph from the dungeon and explained the dream. Then Joseph, with the help of the Holy Spirit, told him the meaning: famine was coming upon the land, and he needed to make preparations. As a result of this interpretation, Pharaoh appointed Joseph as the second-highest person in all of Egypt. His task was to prepare Egypt for this famine. Joseph, with the anointing of the Holy Spirit, was able to accumulate so much that in Genesis 41:49 it says they had to stop keeping records because they had so much surplus in the storeroom. Some versions say it was beyond measure. Like Joseph, we have a storeroom we can access that is beyond measure.
