  • Episode 53: Power of Proximity Part 2 with Michelle Warren

    24/09/2017 Duración: 39min

"We can see evidence of injustice all around us, whether in continuing incidents of racial inequality or in the systemic forces that disenfranchise people and perpetuate poverty. It's important to learn about the world's inequities and to be a voice for the voiceless any way we can. But in an age of hashtag and armchair activism, merely raising awareness about injustice is not enough. Michelle Warren knows what is needed. She and her family have chosen to live in communities where they are "proximate to the pain of the poor." This makes all the difference in facing and overcoming injustice. When we build relationships where we live, we discover the complexities of standing with the vulnerable and the commitment needed for long-term change. Proximity changes our perspective, compels our response, and keeps us committed to the journey of pursuing justice for all. Move beyond awareness and experience the power of proximity." - Michelle Warren* (Power of Proxmity) This is Part 2 of 2 with Michelle Warren talking

    03/09/2017 Duración: 01h04min

Episode 50 of the Brew Theology Podcast features Dr. Tink Tinker, Ph.D. (wazhazhe/Osage Nation) Baldridge Professor of American Indian Cultures and Religious Traditions - Iliff School of Theology. After this episode, I encourage you to sit down with some friends and talk about the following quesitons (in a pub would be nice!). What is the difference Tinker posits between worldview and ideology? How then would each of these impact the development of language in a socio-political whole? Are people really able to choose their worldview? Or are they really only choosing between ideologies (without demeaning the importance of this later)? How big is the range of “difference” within what Tinker identifies as the euro-christian worldview? Is it possible for two disparate worldviews to find an amicable balance within any given socio-political whole? Have we not often enough found it difficult enough for differing ideologies to live side by side? Say marxism and euro-christian, democratic capitalism? If the choice is

  • Episode 48: Mental Health - The Elephant In Every Room - Part 2

    21/08/2017 Duración: 50min

Part 2... Go to a pub, and take a look around the room. Take it in. What do you see? Do you see the young professional so saturated in fear and worry that they are terrified of being found out as a fraud just like their mind has always said they were?  Can you spot the functional alcoholic so desperate for relief from the weight of hopelessness and depression that they are deciding if this is the night that they end it all? What about the social outcast trying to interact with a group of acquaintances and missing every social cue getting eye-rolls and hushed comments about how odd they are? Though you may not notice any obvious tells, the reality is that they, and many others, are there struggling with their own mental health conditions. Mental Health America (MHA) reports that 1 in 5 adults in America have a mental health condition, over 40 million people. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that number rises to over 300 million people worldwide. In addition, over half of those Americans with conditions

  • Episode 42: Show Me The $$$: Economic Justice

    20/06/2017 Duración: 56min

From the Neolithic Revolution (the period in which Hunter-Gatherer proto-societies began domesticating crops and livestock) leading all the way to the present, the political, theological, andeconomic spheres of life have almost always been inseparably entwined with one another. This has proved at times to be incredibly helpful for those who control land and resources, while simultaneously being the cause of great pain and oppression for marginalized communities. What do you see as the current relationship between our religious, political, and economic leaders? What is different between the structuring of the Egyptian and Roman Empires, and our current political/religious/economic context here in the US? This is Episode 42 of the Brew Theology Podcast. • Episode 39: Holy Grub: Food & Religion

    30/05/2017 Duración: 01h02min

In Episode 39 of the Brew Theology Podcast, Holy Grub is served. Janel, Andy, Meghan & Liz brew up an always relvant topic: food and religion. Food and Religion are routinely interwoven into the fabric of cultures. Far from being separate entities, a religion’s perspective of, use of, and beliefs about food and consumption help define norms, practices, and habits surrounding eating, and manifest in a wide range of practices around the world. For instance, Hindu’s reverence of cows helped shape an entire culture of people who revere and protect cattle, often leading to violent cultural clashes between local Muslims for whom cow is one of the few halal – or allowable – types of meat in which to eat. Or, for instance, take the Catholic observance of Lent, which for devotees, encourages an abstinence from red meat at times, while also employing an elaborate metaphor (or is it?) about eating and drinking the flesh and blood of their savior. All of this and so much more...  This show is brought to you by Boggy

    15/05/2017 Duración: 41min

In episode 37 of the Brew Theology podcast, Ryan, Dan, Alex, Brian and Adam brew up the topic, "Atonement Theories." This is Part 1 of 2 episodes. This show is brought to you by Seedstock Brewery. If you dig this episode and/or other Brew Theology shows, give this episode a share, rate Brew Theology on iTunes and give BT a brewtastic review! So, what’s atonement?  Maybe you’ve heard it best understood by the English, “At – ONE – ment”… meaning humanity being at “one” with the divine ONE! This is a good place to start. I’d add the original Hebrew, “Kaphar,” which is where we get the word, “atone,” literally meaning, “to cover.” This comes from the covering of Israel’s sins on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16). Next, theories of Atonement are explanations from scholars over the past 2,000 years who have tired to explain the mystery of what happened to Jesus and this world: past, present and future on the cross! Many Christians have been taught (Or it’s simply been infused into modern, Western Christianity thr
