  • Episode 30: "Barrel Aged Gospels" with Dr. Craig Blomberg

    26/03/2017 Duración: 01h09s

Ready for some barrel-aged theology? Ever had a drink from Matthew, Mark, Luke & John? Anyone who grew up in the Christian church was heavily influenced by the writings from these Gospels. In fact, these ancient texts have influenced civilization for two millennia. But are they reliable? How can we trust documents from 2,000 years ago that were written many decades after the life of Jesus? Remember the game of telephone as a child? Did the earliest followers of Jesus fabricate stories of a life that never existed, or were they carefully crafting stories that are highly reliable and worthy of our respect today? Distinguished New Testament theologian, Dr. Craig Blomberg* brewed up some barrel-aged goodness on Episode 30 of the Brew Theology Podcast! If you dig this episode and other Brew Theology shows, give this episode a nice 'lil share on the interwebs, rate Brew Theology on iTunes and give BT a brewtastic review! As we walk into 2017 with an unknown political and social future ahead, many of us are concerned about oppression, marginalization and division ahead - especially for those who are most vulnerable. How will we respond? How will we build movements of resistance and resilience? Amanda Henderson, Executive Director of the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, guides us to explore how the first step to building a new world of radical justice and hospitality is to 'Gather our People'. Who are 'our people'? What does it look like to strengthen 'our people'? Who are those who aren't 'our people'? What is the risk and benefit of focusing on 'our people'? This episode is relevant, indeed... Cheers!   /// Rev. • Episode 20: "Rogue One" - A Hanukkah Story

    23/12/2016 Duración: 01h04min

In Episode 20 of the Brew Theology Podcast, Ryan and friends - Meghan, Liz, Dan & Shoshana - brew up an Hanukkah episode just in time. Yup. The original Rogue One Star Wars Rebels were Jewish. Let's finish the holiday season spinning the dreidel, lighting the menorah & digging into the liberation movement of Hanukkah then and NOW... Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the miracle of the oil. It is an 8-day celebration that commemorates a Jewish victory over tyranny and begins on the lunar month Kislev 25 (Dec. 24 sunset–Jan.1 sunset ‘16/ ‘17). The Hanukkah story is found in 1 Maccabees (apocrypha), and is the story of how Judas Maccabee and his band of freedom fighters overthrew the Seleucid forces under the rule of Antiochus “Epiphanes” during the 2nd Century BCE. Hanukkah is not a biblical festival recorded in Hebrew Scriptures as it began after the last books of the Scriptures were completed. However, it is recognized in the Christian New Testament (John 10), as we see Jesus going to the t

  • Episode 16: "Devils & Demons"

    05/12/2016 Duración: 56min

In Episode 16 of the Brew Theology Podcast, Ryan and friends - Janel, Chris, Monica & Liz dive into the abyss of darkness and talk about their experiences and theology with devils and demons.   Dana Carvey’s classic, Church Lady skit on SNL from the 90’s brings us to the hilarious and haunting question, “Could it be SATAN?” Perhaps you’re familiar with John Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” which describes Lucifer’s descent from the heavenly realm. Maybe you’ve been Bedazzled by Elizabeth Hurley, the sly princess of darkness released in 2000. How about Al Pacino’s stellar performance in “The Devil’s Advocate?” There’s no shortage of red-horned, culturally devilish goodness. The conversation of Satan and demons has been around for thousands of years. Some want to label the “demonic” and/ or “satanic” as simply aspects to address liberation theology, tangibly rescuing those held in oppression. Others seem to talk of the supernatural in literal terms, and in so doing, dismiss the conversation and application of huma

We've provided some show notes/ resources below for your own experience(s), below. As long as religion has existed, prayer has been an integral if not foundational aspect to the practice of faith. What is it like to pray? What have we experienced in prayer? How has God met us there? ... Many people have really mixed feelings about prayer. What about you? Enjoy this episode, friends.
