The Power of Words in TNG.   Star Trek has never shied away from taking advantage of the power of words, from Shakespeare to technobabble to inspirational speeches, and The Next generation is no exception. There have been many moments and episodes that have pushed our vocabulary, introduced us to works of literature, and taught us something new in the process.    In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan and Justin Oser are joined by guest Shoaib Mirza, Associate Producer of The Edge, to list their three favorite uses of words, language, and communication on The Next Generation. Undercover Missions.   Whilst Star Trek has always shown us a positive vision of the future, there have been times when stealth and disguise have been required. Through various planned and forced undercover missions, our heroes have deftly and secretly gone where no Romulan, Cardassian, Mintakan, or Malcorian has gone before - sometimes with mixed results.    In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan and Justin Oser are joined by guest Christos Giannaris to discuss some of the undercover missions in The Next Generation. The episodes discussed are “Who Watches the Watchers,” “First Contact,” “Unification I and II,” “Chain of Command, Parts 1 and 2,” and “Face of the Enemy."   Chapters  Intro (00:00:00)   Babel Conference Feedback (00:02:06) Welcome, Christos! In the course of three episodes of The Next Generation and one episode of Deep Space Nine, Kurn is tested again and again by the dramatic events happening within the Klingon Empire and between the sons of Mogh. Favorite Star Trek Memorabilia.     Star Trek memorabilia is almost as old as Star Trek itself. Over the last nearly 53 years, there has been a huge variety of Star Trek items collected by fans the world over, from action figures to photos to collectible cards to screen-used props and costumes and everything in between. Serialized TNG, Part 1.   Starting in 2006, a series of DVD collections were released under the name Star Trek: Fan Collective. These collections included episodes across all live action Star Trek series that had aired up to that time, centered around themes like Klingons, Q, and the Borg. We're starting a new series on Earl Grey to discuss episodes of The Next Generation included on these collections and to look at them as if they were serialized story arcs.   In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson, Justin Oser, and Joe Keegan, talk about four episodes of The Next Generation that were part of the Klingon-centered release of the Star Trek: Fan Collective DVD collections. The episodes discussed are "A Matter of Honor," "Sins of the Father," "Redemption," and "Redemption II." Favorite Conflict Resolution Moments in TNG.   Conflicts and how those conflicts are resolved are an essential part of storytelling. Gene Roddenberry famously said that in The Next Generation, there should be no conflict among the characters that we follow. The writers often expressed that this was a challenge in creating stories for the show. However, we do see plenty of conflicts with outside forces and even some between the characters on the Enterprise-D and the Enterprise-E. How those conflicts are resolved within the episodes and movies of The Next Generation are an important aspect of the show's enduring appeal. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Shoaib Mirza, Associate Producer of The Edge, to list their three favorite conflict resolution moments from The Next Generation. Each participant talks about why the moments discussed are meaningful to them and important to understanding the characters on The Next Generation. Chapters Intro (00:00:00)  Babel Conference

Riker's Command Offers.   William T. Riker serves as first officer on the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E for a total of 15 years during seven seasons of The Next Generation and four movies. In that time, he is offered command of a Starfleet ship three times and declines each time before finally accepting command of the USS Titan. Why does Riker keep turning down command offers and what do the times we do see him in command say about what he would be like in command of his own ship? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Brian Meloche, Associate Producer of The Edge, to talk about Riker's command offers. The discussion includes talking about why he declines offers to command three different Starfleet ships, why he accepts command of the USS Titan, and the different times that we see Riker in command of the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E. "Gambit."   "Gambit, Parts I and II" are episodes toward the beginning of season 7 of The Next Generation that were unlike anything previously aired in a Star Trek series. After a nearly 30-year ban by Gene Roddenberry on episodes focusing on space pirates, here were two episodes that largely take place on a mercenary ship engaged in piracy. The space pirate ship, however, is really a means to explore how a number of the main characters deal with different roles and situations than we're used to seeing. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Chris Tribuzio, Associate Producer of Earl Grey, to talk about the two-part "Gambit" episode.
