Revelation Part Thirteen: Poverty & Riches. Some sound issues today as Mike's mic decided to defect... “To the angel of the church in Smyrna write..." This episode we continue our decent into Revelation. Laodicea was an affluent city, located strategically at the intersection of three major trade routes. The city quickly became a banking and trading center, known especially for its woolen carpets and clothing. Also in Laodicea was one of the ancient world’s most prominent medical schools, especially famous for its eye and ear treatments.  Scholars have found cultural allusions in this message not only to Laodicea’s wealth but also to the local production of eye salve, the use of black wool, and especially the city’s lack of a good water supply. How does that fit metaphorically? How does Las Vegas fit in? What does the "lukewarm, I'll spit you out" reference have to do with it? There are so many cultural references... where do we fit in? There was another school shooting in Tennessee last week. Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9; Mike Hill, 61; William Kinney, 9; Katherine Koonce, 60; Cynthia Peak, 61; and Hallie Scruggs, 9. Mike walks us through the event itself, scripture being bastardized in response and what the Bible actually says about violence. Lord, we grieve so heavily, again, over this loss of precious and innocent life. We pray that their communities would come alongside them, love and sit with them. We pray that we do not grow calloused and accepting of this continuing and escalating violence. Father, we ask that you would soften the hearts and open the eyes of your people. That they would see this violence for what it is. That they would choose life and the edification of humanity over rights and tools of destruction Father, we pray that you would give courage and integrity to those we have chosen to lead. Give them discernment and clarity, wisdom and empathy. Father, allow them to see these tragedies for what they are and to act according
