Vox Podcast With Mike Erre

Informações:

Sinopsis

In October of 2015, Mike Erre launched the VOX Podcast upon a season of struggling with the church's efforts to represent who Jesus is, what he's done, and what he is doing on this earth today. Committed to Talk About Anything, Mike quickly engaged into many of culture's most challenging conversations around the LGBTQ community, American politics, church politics, and Christian culture's catastrophe of marginalizing the very people that Jesus himself would associate with.Learn more at www.voxpodcast.com

  • 397 - God & Guns: Lament For Another School Shooting

    03/04/2023 Duración: 01h23min

There was another school shooting in Tennessee last week. Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9; Mike Hill, 61; William Kinney, 9; Katherine Koonce, 60; Cynthia Peak, 61; and Hallie Scruggs, 9. Mike walks us through the event itself, scripture being bastardized in response and what the Bible actually says about violence. Lord, we grieve so heavily, again, over this loss of precious and innocent life. We pray that their communities would come alongside them, love and sit with them. We pray that we do not grow calloused and accepting of this continuing and escalating violence. Father, we ask that you would soften the hearts and open the eyes of your people. That they would see this violence for what it is. That they would choose life and the edification of humanity over rights and tools of destruction Father, we pray that you would give courage and integrity to those we have chosen to lead. Give them discernment and clarity, wisdom and empathy. Father, allow them to see these tragedies for what they are and to act according

  • 396 - Tell Her Story - with Dr. Nijay Gupta

    27/03/2023 Duración: 01h07min

Tell Her Story. Dr. Nijay Gupta joins Mike and Tim to discuss his new book, "Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church." First, Dr. Gupta talks about his own journey and study. If women can’t be trusted with teaching or leading at church, why should they be trusted teaching other women or children? Did the first century understand terms like patriarchy? How does Paul speak about his ministry associates, Phoebe, Prisca, and Junia? Why Mary as the caretaker of the Messiah? How do ideas of status and gender relate? How have we taken our own patriarchal structures and superimposed them onto scripture? As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. While this isn't a justice oriented song as the others have been, what can we glean? How does scripture in form the lyrics? What's an Ebenezer?? How did his own song come back to minister to himself? Tim covers some of the history, but not all. Bob had a long journey that was fraught with turmoil. He had a long ministry that many loved but ostracized

Reorientation to the Center. This episode, Mike and Tim read an email asking about how to approach 'Church discipline.' Mike takes us on a journey through the 'centered' approach and how 'Church discipline' should look more like a reorientation to the center. Tim asks questions about the church model and how it is built to set up Pastors for failure. How can we better change the model? How can the chasm or wall built between the public and private self be dismantled so that Pastors can share vulnerability and struggle more openly? How does the performative nature of Church feed this? How does capitalism?? How has a woman's sexuality been framed? How was a woman's relation to a man set up? What trauma does this all bring into a relationship? How does it continue in the marriage? What about for men? How has this imbalanced dichotomy effected men's understanding of their own sexuality? How does it effect the way men, the Church and society view and treat women? What does the Bible say?  First, Mike takes us through a review of the first six chapters of the book, "Beautiful Union," that this article was taken from. What does it get wrong theologically? • 390 - Revelation - Part Three: Apocalypse

    13/02/2023 Duración: 01h19min

Revelation - Part Three: Apocalypse. This episode, Mike and Tim begin a conversation on 'genre,' and how the original audience understood and entered into the 'apocalyptic literature' of Revelation. How does the first sentence set up the book? What are we to understand from the time period? How does time itself inform how we approach Revelation? How is the Bible like a Barnes & Noble or any bookstore? How have we done a disservice to the text with a linear approach?   First, Mike and Tim discuss an email asking about the "He Gets Us" ad campaign that will feature during the Super Bowl. Is this how "evangelism" should look? Would Jesus use this approach? Is more eyes on Jesus a good or bad thing, especially in a commercial setting?  And Tim shares some Tim's Troubled Times over extreme conservatives who are attacking schools and why did Trump execute three times as many people during his Presidency that the US had in the last 60 years?   Characteristics of Apocalyptic Literature:   1. Songs of Resistance: Dangers, Toils & Snares. AKA, Amazing Grace. Welcome to another mini series of The Wanderer, this time focused on trying to understand and define worship. Each episode will look at the history of a particular Hymn and its origin story, how it may have roots in Justice and what it may encourage us to participate in today. Further, every episode will end with a recorded version of the song by Tim, to listen to after walking through the song's history.  This week, it is what is most likely the most famous and well known song of all time: "Amazing Grace."  What is the history of this song? How has it lasted so long? Why is it so popular? Tim covers some of the history, but not all. There was Newton being exiled himself, his father rescuing him. The relationship between himself and William Cowper, William Wilberforce... William Walker (so many Williams...). The Second Great Awakening, Dwight Moody... There is so much to cover. But the main piece is, what is Grace? How does it inf

Nick talks to Mike and Time about his upbringing and experiences with police as a young African American boy. Why did he want to become a police officer? How did his time in the military speak into it? Despite the fact that the five officers who beat Tyre Nichols to death, was this a racially motivated crime? How do we begin to change this narrative in America? What does the Institute for American Policing Reform do?  How can we help?   Mike and Tim begin with an email critique of their condescending tone towards dispensationalism from the previous episode. • 388 - Revelation - Part Two: Left Behind

    30/01/2023 Duración: 01h08min

Revelation Part Two: Left Behind. Today, Mike takes us on a journey through a few hot button, five cent words: Dispensationalism! Tribulation! Rapture! The Millennium! How have we gotten to where we are with the prophetic, futurist view we have of Revelation? What do all these terms mean? How did they become all encompassing with our understanding of the book? How do we detach from all of that to see what is really being said?   Mike and Tim spend the first part of the episode discussing a listener email that prompts a conversation about why bad things happen to faithful people. Does God really bring good from all things? Does God allow or prompt evil so that good may prevail? What are we to do with sickness and tragedy? • Gospel and Gombis: Part One

    16/01/2023 Duración: 01h01min

Gospel and Gombis. Starting a new series of conversations with Dr. Timothy Freakin Gombis that will feature once a month or so. This is the “Gospel” we received growing up: I am a sinner. God’d wrath is upon me and that wrath is a judgment that occurs after I die. If I have not accepted Christ then I am damned to Hell where I am tortured for an eternity. However, if that process is interrupted and someone shares the Gospel with me and I pray a prayer that invites Jesus into my heart, then won that day of judgment I am welcomed into Heaven… What is the invitation to Jesus? How has the way we have individualized the Gospel effected its message? What did the phrase ‘the Kingdom of God’ cultivate in people and their communities in Jesus’s time? What was the invitation then? What is the Kingdom invitation now? What have we added to it to confuse or distort the invitation? 18:00 - The Gospel and Gombis As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Hope & Despair in the New Year. Pastor and friend Suzie Lind joins Mike and Tim to discuss Christianity Today's top 20 stories of 2022. What do these stories say about the Church? What do they say about us? What do they say to the world? What better questions could we ask? What better ways could we respond to controversy and abuse? First, everyone sits down with two listener questions about how to leave a Church well, in a New Creation way and how does one, as a Youth Pastor, change the event driven model? Taking Christ out of Christmas. It's Christmas time here at Voxology. Today, we're joined by our good friend and Pastor, Bethany Nass Cseh, to talk about the day we set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus. How did Christmas become the celebration it is today? What were the circumstances around the Christ's actual birth? What beef do we all have with Christmas traditions? What would Jesus want from a celebration of His birth? We spend a lot of time talking about Mary. The scandal of her pregnancy. Her Magnificat in Luke. The role of a Mother to a savior ad His need for her. Some of the beauty that is lost in the blood and flesh of the incarnation.  First, we discuss a Tweet proclaiming that the reason men don't attend Church is because it's too effeminate :/ Bethany's books can be found here: Stepping Into Advent & Stepping Into Lent. 19/12/2022 Duración: 55min

Is the term Elder used in the Bible? If so, how? What are the qualifications expressed? Are they gendered? What examples do we have of women leading and what do we know of their roles? We do we do so many mental gymnastics to keep men in charge? First, the Erre boys discuss the year in review and then Tim brings in a few Strange Stories about a possible Vampire buried beneath the Notre Dame Cathedral and a new study that determines how American Evangelicals picture the face of God. 0:00 - Errecane 4:50 - Strange Stories 13:30 - Women as Elders As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Further, every episode will end with a recorded version of the song by Tim, to listen to after walking through the song's history. This first episode looks at the Christmas time hymn, "O Holy Night," and how it became an abolitionist anthem.  How can it challenge us today? What role does music like this serve in our lives? Here, in this first episode, Tim briefly speaks to the genesis of this series and his struggles with modern worship and how they led to his no longer leading (or singing, or participating, or not cringing). What is worship? What does God ask of us in this? How to we enter into counter programming to rewire the way we worship and operate on a daily basis. This is the long road
