  • Ep. 82- Here. We. Go.- 2018/2019 Season Preview, with Many, Many Guests

    07/08/2018 Duración: 01h52min

Parts of the squad spent time in Russia, most have gone to China and back, been to France, and finally Staplewood and St. Mary’s. As fans, we’ve analyzed transfers and rumors, watched dodgy streams, called for action, and probably gotten our hopes all too high, while at the same time causing scenes in various corners of the internet when the team didn’t perform as well as we would have liked. With all of that out of the way, the season is here. Finally. This week on the show I’m joined by a number of guests to help give us some insight into what we think will happen this season. This show wouldn’t be anything without the guests who so willingly contribute their time and the listeners who listen and give feedback as often as they do. This is truly the best thing about the show. Interacting with you, talking to people, getting to hear their reasoning, talking about the club we all love.   Give this week’s guests a follow on Twitter if you are not doing so already.   Guests, in order of appearance: Lucy

  • Ep. 81- Smile and Sing, A New Season Is Here, with Chris Huskins of podtips.pro

    31/07/2018 Duración: 01h16min

Yes, this episode is long. I apologize. Also, I said Mike Murphy lives on the Isle of White, and that’s a lie. Mike Russell lives there. Mike Murphy lives in Florida. Both do podcast stuff. I follow them both. I apologize for making the mistake. Talk about your all-time backfires. Get a guy who loves and produces podcasts and who happens to be a Saints fan and who also happens to be a lifelong resident of Southampton, then have him on your show and then make sure you mess up the audio worse than you have in at least 6 months. Super. Great job, Matt. But, Chris Huskins is my guest this week, and he’s amazing. From Podcast production to digital marketing and speaking, he does a fantastic job. He’s been someone I’ve sought out time and time again to get feedback and advice on the podcast, and he’s truly been invaluable in the development of this show. All of the links to his stuff are below and I highly recommend you look him up, give him and follow and check out his website, no matter what stage of podcast/pr

  • Ep. 80- Derby is Done, but Pre-Season Rolls On, with Blake Hampton

    24/07/2018 Duración: 01h03min

This week I chatted with Blake Hampton (@BlakeAHampton on Twitter) about the most recent week for Saints. With four new signings in, we’ll discuss the overall performance of the squad in the friendly against Derby, the business that’s been done thus far, and answer a load of questions sent in via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (thank you, by the way). As always, I hope you enjoy the episode. Please be sure to share, rate, and review the show wherever you listen. • Ep. 79- Safe Hands, Great Dane. With Along Come Norwich and Vollraute

    17/07/2018 Duración: 43min

The World Cup is over. The trophy goes to France and if N’Golo Kante’s sheepish grin can’t cheer you up, maybe some talk about Saints’ newest signings can. So, that’s what we have this week. I spoke with two podcast hosts this week to get their perspective on Angus Gunn and Jaanik Vestergaard. First, I spoke with Jon Punt from alongcomenorwich.com about Angus Gunn. Although Saints signed Gunn from Manchester City, he was on loan at Norwich last season and grew up a fan of the club. His father, Bryan Gunn was also a goalkeeper and manager at Norwich. We discuss Angus’ attributes, his ceiling, he motivation and more. We also check in on Harrison Reed and get Jon’s view on his loan spell at Norwich last season. Jon and the rest of the Along Come Norwich crew spoke with Angus’ father Bryan on an episode of their podcast a few months ago. In it, Bryan gave some more insight into Angus’s development and aspirations. The link is below if you are interested in giving it a listen.   Secondly, I spoke with Manuel

  • Ep. 78- New Crew, Old Crew, and #SavetheCrew, with @Toddrick33

    10/07/2018 Duración: 01h09min

Saints are once again adding to the crew. Just hours after @Toddrick33 and I sat down to record this episode, Saints’ pursuit of Jannik Vestergaard intensified as the move now seems imminent. Meanwhile, back here in the US there is another Crew, in Columbus, that is being threatened. Todd joins me to discuss becoming a fan of Saints, his trip to St. Mary’s, the current situation surrounding the Columbus Crew, Saints transfer window, a bit on the World Cup and even some listener questions. Todd also does a podcast focused on the Columbus Crew. You can find them on Twitter @Podcast4Cbus. As always, let us know how we did. • Ep. 77- Elyounoussi, Meet Saints. Saints, Elyounoussi. With Andrew Walker

    03/07/2018 Duración: 01h01min

Saints have been busy this week. From signing a new attacker, to welcoming back the majority of the squad for the beginning of training to getting on a plane over the China for the first few friendlies ahead of the new campaign. We discussed Stuart Armstrong and his potential impact last week with Stephen Brandt, and this week we turn our focus to newly signed Norwegian international, Mohamed Elyounoussi. The attacker comes to Saints from FC Basel, and lucky for us, there is a Saints fan who holds a season ticket at FC Basel. He’s former Saints Podcast host, Andrew Walker (on Twitter @SaintsPodcast and on Instagram @andydubya84). We discuss Elyounoussi, the trip to China, our defenders, and what we think the club needs to do the rest of the window… and a bit of the World Cup as well. Hope you enjoy it! • Ep. 76- A New Chapter in a New Story, with Mark Sanderson and Stephen Brandt

    26/06/2018 Duración: 01h16min

***Note*** There's a little bit of clicking coming from the Skype connection during Mark's interview. Sorry about that. Hopefully you can ignore it.    Stories play a huge role in our lives. We listened to them as children, we pass on tales of adventure both true and embellished to our kids, for centuries before there was writing, the entire history of humankind and of earth was passed down orally. So, it only seems natural that, in this age of advanced technology, more and more people who enjoy telling stories are coming to audio (to podcasts, specifically) to share their stories with the world.   Mark Sanderson is an author, a PR guy, a dad, a husband, a Saints fan, and a storyteller. His articles are entertaining, and his book both intriguing and inspiring. He’s been on this show before to talk about his book Bobby Stokes: The Man from Portsmouth who Scored Southampton’s Most Famous Goal, and now he’s back to talk a little bit about his new show, “Behind the Story: A Podcast Mostly About Football.” Jo

  • Ep. 75- A Father and His Son... and Saints FC, with Steve and Dan Jarvis

    19/06/2018 Duración: 53min

Father’s day has just passed, and on that day, and hopefully others as well, we remember the connection and relationship we have with our dad’s. Additionally, for those of us fortunate enough to have children, it’s a chance to spend some time with them, and gives them a chance to tell us what they think.   Not all homes are happy ones, and not all relationships are good ones, but often there is some bond, something that draws the best out of all involved. For my dad and I it was baseball. He coached, I played, I watched his softball games, we went to professional games together, we watched at home, he taught me all about the game, about the intricacies and subtleties of it, and for most of my life I loved baseball more than anything else.   I was lucky to have that. No matter what else happened in our relationship, we had that, and that won’t change.   This week on the show I spoke with Steve and Dan Jarvis about their relationship and supporting Saints. Steve was in an accident over 30 years ago that

  • Ep. 74- Four Saints Go To Russia, with The Saints Centre and The Southampton Page

    12/06/2018 Duración: 45min

The World Cup kicks off this week in Russia, but if won’t be in the land of borscht and vodka this summer, don’t worry. You are far from alone. Virgil Van Dyke, Ryan Bertrand, Radja Nainggolan, Leroy Sane, all of the USMNT and Italy, and many more are missing out on the trip.   But, Saints are sending four players to represent the club in Russia this summer, and though we’ve covered Jan Bednarek’s Poland already (link here if you missed it), we’re taking a some time this week to make sure we get at least a brief look at the other players making the trip.   Jay Grant of the @southamptonpage joins me to talk Yoshida and Japan, and George Rebbeck (@polishmaldini ) and Harry Holder(@Nadalesque) of the @SaintsCentre stop by to take a look at Cedric’s Portugal and Tadic’s Serbia.   Join us as we take a look at the clubs and the players, and help get our set our expectations just high enough so it hurts really badly when they are crushed.   Be sure to give Jay, George, and Harry a follow on Twitter and/or

  • Ep. 73- A Dash of Tash, with Tash Angel of the Southampton Women's Football Club

    05/06/2018 Duración: 42min

The Southampton Women’s Football Club has had quite a run of late. Earning promotion in successive seasons the past two years and only narrowly missing out on an undefeated season and promotion this year. The club has undergone changes in its structure and coaching staff and have come through it all brilliantly. I’ve had the enormous pleasure of being semi-involved with the club over the course of this season. I sponsored one of the coaches, I was able to interview players and coaches, and I have come to love the club just as I love Saints.   The opportunity to speak with Tash Angel, a defender at the club, was amazing. She was easy to talk to, willing to answer almost every question I had, and I can genuinely say I enjoyed the entire thing, from the preparation to the interview to the editing. We were originally scheduled to speak a few months ago, in the buildup to the Hampshire FA Cup Final. However, after the team was disqualified for, according to the allegation and the Hampshire FA’s interpretation of

  • Ep. 72- Poland’s Potential: A World Cup Preview, with Chris Lash of Right Bank Warsaw, in conjunction with Tactics FC

    29/05/2018 Duración: 55min

We are officially done with top flight domestic seasons. The promotion finals are over, the Champions League Final is done, and International Friendlies have already begun. It’s not that Saints aren’t in the news at all, with Mark Hughes and the first team coaching staff signing new three-year contracts last week, but aside from that, there isn’t all that much going on.   So, for this week,we’ve teamed up with a bunch of other podcasts and in conjunction with @Tactics_FC to help bring you a World Cup preview podcast for each team at the tournament. My part in this is to bring a preview of the Poland squad. This is  partially driven by the fact that my country of birth (USA) and the two countries my family comes from (Italy and Norway) failed to make the tournament, leaving me without a country to truly pull for in the finals. Plus, add to it I find Poland’s history, both on and off the pitch, to be interesting, and I kinda know a guy (or at least I’ve spoken with one before) that can help shed some light o

  • Ep. 71- It's Over, It's Done, We Hardly Ever Won, but Thankfully We Survived. End of Season Phone-in Show

    22/05/2018 Duración: 59min

The season is over, the super pod is done and the transfer window is not yet open. So, it was the perfect time to get the opinions and thoughts from some familiar voices and some new friends on the 2017/2018 season, the manager, where we’re going next and more.   The voicemails are raw, the calls are pretty much as I took them, with very little editing done. I wanted to both make sure and capture the thoughts of the callers, and also preserve some time with my family, as both of my kids had “the football” all weekend… oh, and then my neighbor tried to hit someone with a Louisville Slugger, so that was also pretty cool, because who needs sleep?   I wish I could have talked to everyone for a lot longer, but I really enjoy listening to the messages and chatting with those of you I was able to chat with. If you couldn't make the time work you can always try again in the future.   All of this week’s guests are listed below, be sure to give them a shout/follow, or whatever if you aren’t already!   This week

  • Ep. 70- Viruses and Escorts and Swans, Oh My! With Richard Kharman of SerieASitdown and s04_podcast

    09/05/2018 Duración: 42min

**Quick Note** a few audio issues this week, still don’t have all the bugs worked out just yet but everything should be back to normal by next week.   What A Feeling! Tuesday was a rollercoaster of emotions to say the least. The anticipation of the match, the nerves as Swansea attacked and threw men forward, the worry when all of our shots seemed to be going wide or hitting the keeper, and the relief when Gabbiadini put in the net, when McCarthy made that save, and when the referee finally blew the final whistle.   Baring some catastrophic turn of events on Sunday, WE ARE STAYING UP, say WE ARE STAYING UP! And I could not be happier about it!   For this episode I had two calls, my good friend Jamie Grant and Freddie from The Ugly Inside each left me a voice memo (and you can too!) so you’ll hear those, along with a long-winded intro (sorry) and my conversation with fellow Saints FC fan, podcaster, and writer Richard Kharman. We recap the match nd how we’re feeling about the team just moments after it

  • Ep. 69.5- Jon Moss Doesn't Blow, He Sucks, with Harry Holder of The Saints Report

    06/05/2018 Duración: 43min

Saints were painfully close to taking all three points on Saturday at Goodison Park. After taking the lead through a well worked team goal finished off by Nathan Redmond at the back post, Saints took the 1-0 lead into stoppage time, though they were light a man after Yoshida was sent off for picking up a second yellow in the 85th minute.   Even after McCarthy made a spectacular save to deny Leighton Baines from a central free kick, John Moss let stoppage time enter the 6th minute of the 4 (no, that’s not an error), and, with the last kick of the match, Tom Davies’ effort from the top of the box took a deflection off of Wesley Hoedt and past an already committed McCarthy.   The draw pulled Saints out of the relegation zone and puts all the pressure and focus on Tuesday night’s clash with Swansea and the Liberty Stadium. Harry Holder (@nadaIesque on Twitter), admin for @TheSaintsReport, joined me to discuss the match and how the other results affect Saints standing in the table.   Harry is also on Insta

  • Ep. 69- Picking Cherries and Saving Points, with George Galpin of Sky Sports News

    01/05/2018 Duración: 01h07min

Alex- “Dusan Tadic, Mario Lemina, Nathan Redmond” Contestant- “Who are Southampton FC players who have underachieved for nearly all of the 2017/2018 but were instrumental in the club’s April 2018 victory over Bournemouth which left them in the relegation zone that gave the club and the fans some much needed hope and a chance to stay in the Premier League… also, Alex McCarthy is amazing.” Alex-”... you may have only answered one question correctly today, but that was brilliant. It is your selection now” Contestant- "I'll take #pompey sucks for $1,000, Alex. UTS."   Saints took a huge step towards securing a place in England’s top flight last weekend with a hard-fought victory over fellow south coast team Bournemouth. The game, at times, was intense. It took a huge amount of effort and organization from the entire team, and a few moments of excellence from Alex McCarthy and Dusan Tadic to secure the win for the Saints, who’s hopes of survival would have been all but buried had the team not managed to take

  • Ep. 68- Wonderful, Wretched, Wembley, with Ben, Alf, Jay, and Jem

    24/04/2018 Duración: 01h17min

I hate the color blue. I know it sounds like something a 7-year-old might say, but I’m 32 and I’ll stand by it. Football shirts are divided into to major categories, red shirts and blue shirts… there are the occasional teams with other colors, I realize this, but they are the exception to the rule. Anyway, I’ve disliked Chelsea for sometime, given my best friend is an Arsenal fan it’s not hard to image my disdain for the blues. To be honest, I was shocked when Giroud went from Arsenal to Chelsea. He looks better in red, that’s all I’m saying.   Anway, Chelsea x2 and Leicester City (both blue) combined to remove Saints from the FA Cup and push us closer to the Championship in the past week. The team’s performance has varied from silky smooth, free flowing moves, to incisive counter attacks, to calamitous defending and 10 minutes of not knowing which way was up. It’s been a testing week, but also a week in which some Saints’ fans traveled from around the world to witness the FA Cup Semi-final in hopes of see

  • Ep. 67- Bednarek at the Back Post, with Hasan Tariq

    17/04/2018 Duración: 01h12min

I, and am sure we, went through a range of emotions on Saturday. From anticipation and excitement, to elation, to euphoria, and then doubt, moving towards despair, until, finally, I settled on hopelessness.   Saturday hurt me, as a fan. It was the first time in a while, perhaps since the cup final last year, I had been truly gutted. No, we aren’t mathematically relegated, but the manner of the defeat crushed me. I’ve said in the past that giving it your all and losing is better than not trying, and I believe that. But, when we finally see the team put their best foot forward, and still fall short, I can’t see us recovering from that.   But, joining me this week to discuss the 3-2 loss to Chelsea and more is Hasan Tariq. Hasan is a frequent contributor to The Ugly Inside and is active in Saints related chat rooms and forums across the internet. He’s joined the show before on call-in shows, but this is his first start, shall we say. It’s not all doom and gloom… it’s not as bad as that 10 minute stretch on

  • Ep. 66- Finnish but Not Finished, with Antti Niemi

    10/04/2018 Duración: 56min

It’s not very often that most of us get to speak to former professionals. Some are public figures in broadcasting or coaching, some move on to other careers, and some slip away from the crowds and make a life for themselves with their families. Those that are public often seem, at least to me, unreachable. You can see them, you may even say hello, but to actually sit down and have a chat is not something most of us will get the chance to do.   John, of the Saints FC Podcast, has managed to track down several former pros for the podcast, and I truly enjoy those episodes because I learn so much about the team and the players of the time, a time before I began following the red and white stripes, before I began singing “Oh When the Saints” at 4:00am most Saturdays, before I began calling it football. For that reason, I feel especially honored have had the chance to speak with former Saints’ and Finland goalkeeper Antti Niemi. If you have been a fan of Saints since the early 2000s then you will know Antti. The

  • Episode 65: “Beers, Tears, Cheers and Years: Something to Celebrate” Live from the Crown and Cushion with The Ugly Inside and London Saints

    03/04/2018 Duración: 55min

Episode 65 marks a couple of firsts for me. It was after my first ever match, on my first ever trip outside the USA, and recorded a live episode for the first time ever. The podcast has allowed me to speak to so many great people over the time it's been running. From former players, to aspiring journalists and everyone in between. Almost everyone has been super supporting over the time, and to have the opportunity to speak to Nick, Clive, and Freddie of The Ugly Inside was truly a pleasure. Freddie and Clive have been on the show before, way back on episode 9 or so, but this was the first time I had ever been able to sit down and just focus on how Nick and Clive got together to produce the early versions of the Ugly Inside and how it's grown over the past 3 years is truly and honor. What started off as something being produced in a living room over 30 years ago has grown into something heard, seen and known all over the world. The Ugly Inside was one of my very first interactions with any fan site or channel
