Ola Dosunmu on Psalms 1:1-3 The first three verses of the Book of Psalms  – “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. Tim Hughes on James 5: 14-16 Illness is part of living, but illness is also used by the enemy to slow the church down and stop us doing what we should be doing. God helps us in lots of different ways, he gives us the grace to keep going. He also gives us the Bible. It takes a lot of courage to pray for healing for someone who is ill, because a lot of the time nothing happens. Andrew Chu: The far and the near Isaiah 7:13-21 Andrew and his family could be said to represent the far and the near because they are from Hong Kong (a 14 hour flight away) and y et now live just an eight minute walk from Jubilee. Andrew asks who the far and the near were in Biblical times and who they are now. This week at Jubilee we had a guest speaker – Nate Funkhouser from the USA. Nate, who is working for our sister church Jubilee Church Liverpool during his time in the UK, looks at the first chapter of Ruth and what it tells us about identity. It is easy to let the season of life that we are in dictate who we are. But, as Nate illustrates, It makes no sense! Jesus tells us who we are – worthy, redeemed, loved. ​Dave Frodsham: Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath Dave looks at Mark 2:23-3:6 – when the Pharisees question Jesus about whether it is right to heal on the Sabbath. Jesus replies by asking them about whether it is lawful on the Sabbath to do good (by healing) or to do harm (by not healing)? Jesus’ message is that Sabbath was made for man to rest – not so that man, by following it to the letter, should gain admittance to heaven. Dave Frodsham: The Bridegroom and the Lord of the Sabbath Mark 2:18-28 In this passage, where the Pharisees question Jesus about fasting, Jesus is revealing himself as God, not just as a miracle worker. He shows that he wasn’t going to toe the religious line. Dave reminds us that we are not saved by acts such as fasting, giving, and keeping the Sabbath – we are saved so that we can do them. Rick Robertson: Hezekiah Rick looks at the story of Hezekiah, a king who was devoted to God against all the odds. Hezekiah’s father was Ahaz, who burned his own sons as human sacrifices to pagan gods, and Hezekiah lived in a culture that didn’t share his devotion to God. And yet Hezekiah was a faithful servant, working hard to bring people back to God. He was a reformer, like David before him. He trusted God and held onto him. Rick talks about how we Jesus wants to use us to change the culture around us, just like Hezekiah did. Questions to consider: 1. Rick concludes the Father series by looking at 1 Peter 1:13-25. How can we become more holy as we live for Jesus? Rick looks at how it was impossible for us to approach God because He was so utterly good and holy, we would have burned up in His presence. Rick explains that when God sent Jesus, it meant that we could come into God’s presence again as a people renewed. Sylvia Billington of Jubilee Church Wirral on the holy spirit. Like the imaginary friend many of us have in childhood, the Holy Spirit is always with us. But unlike that imaginary friend, the Holy Spirit is absolutely real and never leaves us. When God created man, he was given the entire nature and character of God – in God’s image. But then in Genesis 2:7 he brought the body of man to cover his image. The breath he breathed was to make God’s character alive – and this breath was the holy spirit. But then in Genesis 3, he sinned and lost the spirit of God. He started to kill and sinning badly. He lost the Holy Spirit. Helen O’Brien, one of Jubilee’s Life Group leaders, talks about the letters of the Bible. Thirteen of the letters were written by Paul. The man who used to kill Christians until he met Jesus. Visiting speaker Chris Butterworth on the Kingdom of God. In “Seek first the kingdom”, former Jubilee elder Chris looks at Matthew 6 – essentially Jesus’ manifesto, in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount. Part of the Sermon on the Mount is Jesus teaching the disciples how to pray and what they should be praying for – that God’s kingdom become a reality here on earth.
