  • What adults under 30 really want to stay in Michigan // Food hall first look // Redraw the lines?

    20/09/2023 Duración: 33min

Norris Howard is in and we're talking about a lot. 01:20 - Where we've been, as Norris Howard talked about the WhatChaWannaEat food hall and what international places it reminds him off. That said, he hopes for more vegetarian and vegan options in his community. 06:21 - Jollibee is coming to Metro Detroit. Have you been? 07:55 - There's a new study about what young adults - 18-29 years old - really want to stay in Michigan. There are some surprising results, and a lot of it is about women's rights and enforced gun control. Plus, African Americans feel the least positive about staying in Michigan. What groups feel like they're most ready to leave, vs. not. It's an interesting discussion. Link to poll: https://www.detroitchamber.com/under-30-poll/ 23:47 An opportunity for Wayne and Oakland Counties to vote on a millage to support the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Detroit Historical Museum is making progress in the state legislature. 26:57 - Is it time to redraw the political maps?

  • The power of civility (ft. Stephen Henderson + Nolan Finley)

    19/09/2023 Duración: 19min

Two of Metro Detroit's biggest political voices join us today in Nolan Finley and Stephen Henderson. Stephen as founding editor of Bridge Detroit and host of Detroit Today on WDET - and Nolan as editorial page editor of the Detroit News - they have very different views, but they're good friends and have teamed up to create the Great Lakes Civility Project. As a person who likes a good discussion, civility and how to make it happen is an interesting concept to me - and I wanted to talk it out with two people who have found ways to make it work.  Nolan and Stephen are co-leading a discussing at Civility Night on September 27th at Henry Ford College. It's a free event and you can register here: https://greatlakescivilityproject.com/event/civility-night-at-henry-ford-college/  Plus, bonus Bourbon recommendations at 16:33. • How could we switch to a four-day work week? (ft. Dr. Peter Berg)

    14/09/2023 Duración: 20min

Are you working too much? Are we all working too much? Dr. Peter Berg, a professor of employment relations at Michigan State University, discusses the growing popularity of the four-day workweek and its various forms. The demand for flexibility, especially among younger workers, has led to the desire for a better work-life balance. While these models have been around in Europe for decades, they are now gaining traction in the United States. We talk about different implementations like four ten hour days; working 32 hours a week or 36 instead of 40; and some of the ways employers could make things more flexible and easier on employees.  Tune in to learn more about the benefits and implications of the four-day workweek. Their mayor recently posted about an appearance he had with former National Security advisor Michael Flynn, and there was conflict at the Hamtramck Labor Day festival where city leaders wanted lead the parade and not be next to an LGBTQ group. The changing demographics of the city are driving some to move out, others to not

  • Transit is getting even worse in Detroit

    28/08/2023 Duración: 22min

Detroit’s bus service is a hot mess right now. From not enough drivers, to late performance, to contract negotiations that seem to be in the he said / she said stage.... plus, there’s expansion plans on the horizon that sound good, but it’s not clear how they’re going to get paid for. There’s a lot to unpack. and there’s so many Detroiters reliant on this transit system. To me, it’s a core local service that should just work. It matters, as in the Motor City a large percentage of residents don’t have access to a vehicle. So to help me do this, Aaron Mondry from Outlier Media joins me on the show. It’s an interesting conversation. His report, “Detroit is ‘reimagining’ the future of transportation without fixing current problems” is worth talking about and that’s what we’re going to do today. So what kind of burger craving can it quench? 07:12 It seems fast food and fast casual restaurants are moving to cashless and kiosk ordering. Do you prefer that, or do you want to deal with a person? 09:16 Lots of things happening around greater downtown Detroit from the Godfrey Hotel to more 10:57 Sullivan's steakhouse is coming 12:48 Devon's thoughts on higher-end rents in greater downtown Detroit, and we get into who is paying those rents and what kind of talent is coming into the region from other areas like California's Bay Area that expect higher pay. • Putting life into old schools // $4k a month rent in Detroit? // Michiganders binge use

    23/08/2023 Duración: 24min

Norris, Fletcher and Jer talk about the stories of the day. 00:48 - Jer saw an Instagram post about a rehabbed school into lofts in Berkley, MI - it's called The Ivy - and asked, why not Detroit? Shouldn't we be giving life to all these old school buildings? Why is it happening there (which, great!) but not also in the city of Detroit? Has the opportunity passed?  09:43 - Norris is all about new things, but some new maybe isn't so good. There's a tower that's got rents at $4k a month, and far more for a penthouse.  Is Detroit ready for clout addresses?
