  • Investing in Detroit's future that's already here (ft. Angelique Power)

    22/06/2023 Duración: 19min

Angelique Power heads up the Skillman Foundationa and she's a great person to talk to. When it comes to investing in Detroit, it's often about buildings and sidewalks and infrastructure. And when we talk about talent, it's often about attraction. But what about the ways we need to be investing in who already is here? Detroit is young, diverse, and ready to make a mark on the world. The only question is if they're going to do it here - or somewhere else. And what do we need to be working on so that positive energy stays? It's a wide-ranging conversation and I hope it makes you think. • We need more people (ft. Ned Staebler)

    15/06/2023 Duración: 22min

One of the things that I thought I knew but learned differently when I started this was that I thought most people were on board with growing metro Detroit and Michigan. I have since learned that is very much not the case, and many don’t think any changes are needed. Or, it’s an attitude that we don’t have to make any improvements - and good riddance to those who want to leave or don’t come here. On today’s Daily Detroit for Thursday, June 15th, 2023 - a conversation with Ned Staebler. He’s the Vice President for Economic Development at Wayne State University and head of Techtown - one of Detroit’s most successful startup and entrepreneurial incubators that’s been in the game for two decades. I wanted to talk to Ned as he makes a strong, articulate and experienced case why we need to focus on growth as far as people and what people are paid here in Detroit, Metro Detroit, and Michigan. And how investing in our communities - in things like transit - that are needed to get there. It’s a wide-ranging conversatio

  • Incinerator comes down // NFL dominates sports media // Detroit City ties

    12/06/2023 Duración: 23min

Fletcher Sharpe joins in - We had to slip in a more serious story into the show, as the smokestack of the incinerator has been a part of our Detroit experience as long as we can remember. Good riddance. Also, there's changes in sports media as the NFL continues to gobble up lots of the oxygen, and the The Athletic makes some layoffs to adjust.  Javy Báez need to figure out how to hit a baseball And we see some optimism with the tie in Charleston for Detroit City FC. Now, if we can just activate the offense and get Ben Morris to remember where the back of the net is. We look ahead to Hartford and Memphis. • A tale of two (Metro) Detroits, says Gallup survey

    06/06/2023 Duración: 23min

Often there are stories about "two Detroits," but that also extends into Metro Detroit. A survey out last week from the Gallup Center on Black Voices and the Detroit Regional Chamber is kind of revealing when it comes to Detroit, Metro Detroit, the needs of the people in those communities, and how they perceive things. This first resident survey that I think revealed a lot of interesting topics, and I hope it's done again next year. Norris Howard is on to help break it down. • Detroit's Land Value Tax proposal, explained (ft. Jay Rising)

    01/06/2023 Duración: 15min

It's not news that the city of Detroit has one of highest tax rates in metro Detroit, Michigan and the country. What is news is a new land value tax plan to help change that and get, officials say, a nearly thirty percent cut on property taxes for most Detroit homeowners (and a huge increase on people who own undeveloped vacant land: speculators, downtown parking lots, scrap yard owners, and more). On your Daily Detroit for Thursday, June 1, 2023 - we’re going to dig in to it with someone who is going to know the ins and outs better than anyone I could think of - Jay Rising, the CFO for the city of Detroit. Here’s the full proposal if you want to take a look for yourself: https://detroitmi.gov/departments/office-chief-financial-officer/land-value-tax-plan  These high tax rates are something that discourages people and families from buying and building in the city; and means that many companies just won’t give Detroit a look for locating here. This plan would put Detroit, as far as property taxes, in the midd
