That Thing You Like

NBC's THE GOOD PLACE is having a great first season, and we really wanted to talk about it's unique take on the afterlife, great jokes, and amazing characters. So we did! We celebrate Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, and the gift that is Janet. Plus, we discuss what our own "The Good Place" neighbourhoods would look like, and how we think season one might end. Enjoy!

SILICON VALLEY is a hilarious, perfect skewering of the tech start-up world, it's bro-y culture, and the people who live in it. Brian and Chris talk about the AMAZING cast, our love of Jared, and do a patented CHARACTER POWER RANKING DRAFT! Plus, we end with a deep bow (to the waste) and soothing, duelling "Aviatos". Enjoy! Like the show? Have thoughts about what we said? Let us know! THE SHOW @TTYLshow | BRIAN @Brian_RS | CHRIS @cbax

With the US Election looming and debates between Trump and Clinton in full swing, Brian and Chris share their uniquely Canadian perspective on the state of American politics. Topics include the rise of Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders and a 'revolution', Clinton, and the racist underbelly of white conservatism. Plus, we power rank US Cities we would live in, sort of! Love you.

Brian is a huge music nerd - ever wonder where he gets it from? With Chris on his honeymoon, DOUG SHIRLAW joins the show for a special father-son podcast! The two Shirlaws talk lives spent as music nerds, and Doug tells some great stories about growing up in the 1960's, public transistor radio playing, and the rebirth of singles. They also talk The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, the under-appreciated J. Geils Band, one hit wonders, Father John Misty, and how new music keeps everyone young. Enjoy, and send us your favourite songs @TTYLshow on Twitter!

YOU'RE THE WORST is FXX's anti-romantic comedy - and it's amazing. Just in time for season 3, Chris and Brian discuss the first two seasons of this cutting, heartwarming, very real show. We discuss Gretchen, Jimmy, Edgar, Lindsey, Sunday Fundays, and the most accurate portrayal of depression ever featured on television.

POKEMON is back in the national consciousness thanks to the runaway hit (and potential fad) that is Pokemon Go! We take a trip down memory lane to talk about growing up with Game Boy Pokemon, the Pokemon cartoon, and how we feel about Pokemon Go / augmented reality. Plus, we do a POKEMON POWER RANKINGS DRAFT!

It's the early 2000's: LINKIN PARK, NICKELBACK, and INCUBUS reign on the then-relevant rock music charts. And young Brian and young Chris angstily made their way through the murky waters of high school. In this ep, we go back to bands like NoFX, Creed, and other late 90's / early 2000's nu-rock and nu-metal pioneers that were the soundtrack to our so-called lives! (This was a super fun episode.)

Netflix's STRANGER THINGS is the talk of the internet town! Brian and Chris dissect and discuss some 80's nostalgia, Stephen King and Steven Spielberg-ian influences, and the great acting of the entire cast, including the forever underrated Wynona Ryder! Plus, some bonus POKEMON GO talk at the end of the episode!

The GHOSTBUSTERS remake is out, and guess what? It's great! You can practically hear the smiles on our faces as we talk about the powerhouse female leads of Wiig, McCarthy, Jones, and the show-stealing Kate McKinnon. Plus, we discuss the comedic differences between the classic 80's Ghostbusters, and Paul Feig's more modern, improv heavy Ghostbusters. But really, we just talk about how it's a good movie. Ghostbusters!

GHOSTBUSTERS, the cool all-female led 2016 Paul Feig version, hits theatres today. So why not review the original GHOSTBUSTERS (1984) in celebration? We talk about this classic comedy which was formative for Brian, and a complete zero in the childhood of Chris! Plus, we go over the amazing cast, including Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver, and end things talking about our excitement for GHOSTBUSTERS 2016!

STATION ELEVEN by Emily St. John Mandel is a post-apocalyptic novel with a twist - After the world ends, what good parts of humanity would survive? Friend of the show Erika Moen (OhJoySexToy.com! erikamoen.com) joins us for our first ever book review episode, and it's a great one! We talk about Mandel's beautiful themes, the exciting, deeply connected plot, and talk about what we'd collect if the world ends. Plus, we answer official book discussion questions! SURVIVAL IS INSUFFICIENT.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 6's FINALE just aired, and it might have been the best episode of the show ever? We review the entire season, and talk about how the show has course corrected after BAD seasons and gotten back to a positive place, fan theories about Jaime, Dany's Dragon Conquerer ways, and Jon Snow being involved in things for once. Plus, Sansa and Cersei wrecking shit!

AMY SCHUMER's 2015 was a comedy year for the ages, and TRAINWRECK was her crowning achievement! We talk about the sharp, progressive script and the surprisingly great acting from John Cena and Lebron James. But, we were podcasting while the Brexit vote results were coming in, so we also talk a lot about Britain and the European Union and dumb history unfolding in real time.

HOT ROD - The Lonely Island classic that came before POPSTAR! How can a movie with 40% on rotten tomatoes be so near and dear to our hearts? Surreal comedy, an amazing cast, and one unforgettable hero named Ferguson. That's how. We talk MacGruber parallels, favourite Lonely Island songs, and how this movie's weird energy makes it an all time great. Plus, listen to the end for a special EARBUD ONLY treat!

MONSTER FACTORY is maybe the funniest show in the world right now, and it's on YouTube. For free. Hosted by Justin and Griffin McElroy (of the amazing MY BROTHER MY BROTHER AND ME / ADVENTURE ZONE), we talk about how it made us laugh until we wept, and how the two brothers capture the fun of goofing on video games with your best buds. But in a way that we're all invited to join in on! Plus, Chris reveals his top 3 podcasts of 2016... or does he?

HBO's THE LEFTOVERS is a pretty singular show, and not because it's helmed by the divisive Damon Lindelof. After season two was met with critical acclaim, Brian watched it, and fell in love. Then he asked Chris to watch it. Now, there's this podcast about it! We talk about existential wait, how people cope with the unknown, Chris not knowing Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkel, and our favourite leftovers (cold pizza, all day).

CAPTAIN AMERICA CIVIL WAR is getting rave reviews, with some calling it the best MARVEL movie ever! But is it any good? Well, one of us loved it, and one of us liked it. Find out who, as we talk Robert Downey Jr.'s continued excellence, great character beats, Spider-Man, and how this movie really didn't have any lasting consequences. Like at all. Everyone go read Film Crit Hulk's piece on it!

Brian is out of town, so Chris tries (and maybe fails?) to drive the podcast bus! But fear not! He is joined by multi-time guest and special friend of the show Jenna Reid to discuss the gosh darn delightful television program My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. We talk feminism, bronies, awesome characters, and beautiful artwork. We also answer once and for all the age old question - Which pony is best pony? Will the magic of friendship save the episode? What lessons will we learn along the way? There's only one way to find out...

IT FOLLOWS is an inventive, fun, fresh-but-nostalgic horror movie. And it's the first horror movie in TTYL history that Chris actually liked! We talk about STD-sex demons, themes of nostalgia, a great score, and how this movie's use of tension avoids the typical horror-let down ending. Plus, we spend time talking about Prince, who died the day we recorded. Brian really loved Prince.

DAREDEVIL season two! We tackled the first four episodes a few weeks ago, now learn what we thought of the rest! Hint: We didn't love it. But maybe you did? We talk what worked about Elektra (until it didn't), Matt Murdock vs Wilson Fisk (D'Onofrio!), and what we thought of all those ninjas (so many ninjas!).
