  A divorced mother in Texas is forcing her 6-year old son to identify as transgender, to the utter dismay and disagreement of the boy’s biological father. The mother has also stated her intention to have the boy chemically castrated when he turns eight.   History was almost made recently in the race for governor of Georgia, where the Democrat party nominee Stacey Abrams, a black female, came within less than three percentage points of defeating Republican nominee Brian Kemp, a white male. Apparently, Abrams’ defeat did not set well with many black Democrats, especially when it was revealed that 11 percent of black males supported Kemp. But why would such a thing be seen as problematic to black people? Do they not have the right to vote for the candidate(s) of their choosing?   Recently, Ligonier Ministries released its 2018 ‘State of Theology’ survey, which it conducted in partnership with Lifeway Research (an initial survey was conducted in 2016). To describe the results of the survey as a disheartening reflection of the condition of the evangelical church in America today would be a gross understatement. So disheartening, in fact, that Darrell and ‘Omaha’ (Virgil Walker) have decided to dedicate the next several episode of the Just Thinking broadcast to a discussion of the responses contained in the survey. Good question.   It has been said that politics is a dirty business. That truism was put to the test recently, as things turned ugly on Capitol Hill during Senate hearings held amid sexual abuse allegations made against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by Christine Blasey Ford. Evangelical Christians have a lot riding on a Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court, particularly as it relates to the issue of abortion. But what if Kavanaugh is not confirmed? What then?   In yet another incident of violence involving police and an ethnic minority, Dallas, TX police officer Amber Guyger, has been charged with manslaughter for shooting and killing Mr. Botham Jean. Reportedly, Officer Guyger mistook Mr. Jean’s apartment for her own and shot him when he opened the door to his own residence.   The funeral for the “Queen of Soul”, Aretha Franklin, who died on August 16, 2018, was held on August 31, 2018. The Rev. Jasper Williams, pastor in Atlanta, performed the eulogy.   It seems increasing numbers of so-called ‘evangelical’ Christian ministries are buying into a socio-cultural paradigm of Christianity, particularly as it relates to “affirming” professing believers who identify as “same-sex attracted”. One of the ways they do this is by focusing on virtues like ‘community’, ‘unity’, and ‘diversity’. So much so that a ministry based in the United Kingdom has gone as far as encouraging churches to audit themselves to ensure they are being “biblically inclusive”, especially of those who are LGBTQ.
