  • How to Find a Mentor with LinkedIn Influencer & Microsoft Product Manager Tim Salau

    26/11/2018 Duración: 52min

Imagine going on a cross country road trip but with no navigation… It would seem pretty impossible, right? That’s kind of what it’s like navigating your career journey without a mentor is like. Mentors are there to guide you along the way and help you in those “omg what do I do moments” I’ll be honest finding a good mentor is no easy task. It’s an unstructured process with a lot of trial and error. But the best part of mentorship is that it can come from anywhere- a professor, a manager, a LinkedIn connection, etc. So what does it mean to have a good mentor? According to Tim Salau on Ep.47 of Work in Progress (link in the first comment) ⚡️A good mentor listens ⚡️A good mentor starts acting like a sponsor on your behalf by connecting you to other people and creating opportunities ⚡️A good mentor holds you accountable

  • Real Talk #8 l Is College Worth It?

    23/11/2018 Duración: 36min

As the internet has become more and more prevalent in our society, there's been a big debate on college and if the price matches up with the value. Personally, as a first generation American my parents always viewed college as the gateway to a better life. Now with social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube, more and more internet savvy teens are deciding to start their own businesses instead of studying business in college. Whether you believe in college or not, one thing is for sure: going to class and getting good grades is not enough. If you're passionate about a given field than you have to gain the real-world experience outside the classroom. This can be done through internships, part-time jobs, or creating your own projects. For me, that meant running 6 different social media accounts at once to figure out how to create good, compelling content. ❓What's your opinion on college? Send me a DM and let me know! Did you go to college? Did you drop out?❓

  • Finding Your Focus with DGK Sponsored Skateboarder Ricky Chavez

    19/11/2018 Duración: 28min

As my skateboard laid on the edge of the cement half-pipe, I had one thought, “This will be the last attempt, I’m going to land it this time.” The next thing I knew I was lifting my face from the ground and there was blood everywhere. My failed attempt at dropping in at the skatepark cost me $700 in medical expenses and 4 stitches under my chin. Skateboarding is arguably one of the most brutal sports. It takes a certain level of grit to hop back on a skateboard after falling time and time again. So what is grit? Grit is defined as an individual’s perseverance of effort combined with the passion for a particular long-term goal. No one know’s Grit better than the latest guest on the Work in Progress podcast, Ricky Chavez. Ricky is a 25 year old sponsored skateboarder whose been working on his craft for over 14 years. Day in and day out, he’s showcasing his progression and determination to becoming pro. YOUTUBE VERSION: https://youtu.be/S5i1BAdjJlk

It’s a people-centered industry and fostering relationships is a big part of it. So how do you say no to someone who you’re friends with? Natalie Riso graduated USC as the #1 most followed student on the platform. Her advice for people on how to say no:

  • Real Talk #2 l Stop Saying You Don't Have Time

    28/09/2018 Duración: 09min

I believe it was winter of 2017 when I watched this Ted Talk by Laura Vanderkam called How to Gain Control of Your Free Time. I was sitting in my room with no internship lined up for that summer. Then it hit me.. I was creating this false narrative that I didn't have enough time to look for a job not because I was actually too busy but because deep down it was not a priority. When you say I don't have time for x. What you really mean is I don't prioritize x. The second you accept what you value and how that aligns with your time management is the moment you take control over your time. As I sit here at 12:15 AM writing these show notes, I am awake because this podcast is a priority to me. Send this podcast to someone who may be struggling to find time in their day! • Dropping In To Your Passion with Leann Abad & Sarah Grosz

    24/08/2018 Duración: 52min

“Instead of dropping out, you’re actually dropping into something” I interviewed Leann Abad and Sarah Grosz for the podcast and they explained that dropping out of college was not about disconnecting from education. Rather it was a way for them to further their education in their respective fields. For Leann, that meant dropping out to work on his startup Ashe media. For Sarah, that meant moving across the country to work full-time as a growth hacker BAMF media. The stigma behind college drop outs being lazy or unmotivated could not be further from the truth. In some ways I envy those who have dropped out of college. Because going against the grain of what society has deemed “the right choice” to pursue the unknown takes courage. But, more importantly it takes #selfawareness and as young people that’s what we should be chasing down more than anything.
