Well well well, we find ourselves here again at the end of the road. We've been gazing back at this strange group of nominees and sometimes it's hard to see the Oscars we know today in the nominations of the past. The 2010 Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker, was explosive-pun intended. A woman finally won for Best Director and it took home a lot of other awards that night, however, almost 15 years later we found ourselves asking why? In our penultimate episode this season we are taking a look at Up in the Air. It's a fine film, perhaps even a good film. However, it did not stand a chance to our ramblings this week. Pixar is known for hitting us right where it hurts and Up is no different. You get to see a beautiful example of the human experience in just a few minutes only to be reminded that what we think is the limit of what our lives can be is really only the surface. Sometimes a movie comes along and it just is a movie. We felt left out the loop here with A Serious Man. We didn't quite understand it, and thats okay. Not every movie is going to work for us. We enjoyed some of the performances, the cinematography and really struggled just about everywhere else. Oh no! Did we like a Quentin Tarantino film?! While we haven't seen his entire filmography, when people talk about how great Tarantino is, Inglorious Bastards is his gold standard. An Education was a formative film for us. It was the introduction to a favorite actress, the start to a love of independent films and a hard look at the whimsy of being a young impressionable girl. District 9 did all the things we wanted Avatar to do. It was an exciting new Sci-Fi film telling a story with humanity at its center. We’ve seen this story before, right? White boy and his western civilization come to a new place and tries to make friends with the indigenous peoples, there is a love story as bland as water, and a heavy dose of environmentalism. We could name more than one movie with this plot…James Cameron, come on! We can’t even try and make excuses that the story is simple because the technology was so new and the focus of the movie because he regurgitated tired stories again in the sequel. Looks like we made it! Here in the final episode of this years Conversations with Oscar Series we're talking about one of the more inventive movies we've seen. Jonathan Glazer crafted an uniquely told story that felt like a rain cloud hovering over the bright shiny Höss family. If we didn't know any better, we would think they were living a happy normal life. Yorgos Lanthimos has delivered another Best Picture nominee but this time it has all a little undecided how we feel. Visually, this movie is stunning. The time has come for us to talk about the secret sleeper amongst the Best Picture nominees. American Fiction seemingly came out of nowhere and scored five nominations. It's an important satirical comedy that surprised us with how much we enjoyed it. What happens when you allow a person with too much theatre kid energy to make their passion project? Turns out you get this mess of a movie.
