We Have Thoughts!

We finally saw one of the most anticipated movies of last year, and we had some differing thoughts. The three hour Martin Scorsese epic tells the story of The Reign of Terror that occurred in Oklahoma in the early twentieth century. While we all agree it is visually a beautiful movie, we couldn't help but feel like we wanted to see this story from the point of view of the Osage. Cozy vibes? Check! Banger soundtrack? Check! Cast with amazing chemistry? Check! Alexander Payne's quiet Christmas movie snuck up on us and stole our hearts.  It is hard to deny this film its accolades when it made us feel so warm and fuzzy. We hope this movie is a great jumping off point for Dominic Sessa and leads to more Da'Vine Joy Randolph in everything everywhere all the time. What did you think of The Holdovers? Hi Barbie! Who would have thought that a Barbie movie would be one of the best movies of the year and also Oscar Nominated? Greta Gerwig made sure that all of our preconceived notions on what a Barbie movie could be were completely wrong. She brought to life a moving story about what it means to be a woman today. Every word, performance, and detail was handled with such thought and care it is no surprise that it was nominated for Best Picture. What did you think of Barbie? AND THE WINNER IS...a let down? We have had so much fun this season with some really great films. Films that we called perfect, modern classics, innovative, surprising; and it all led to one of the most predictable Best Picture Winners. Surprising to no one, this was not on the top of any of our rankings at the end of this season, but we can't say we didn't like it. Colin Firth gives a moving performance because he can do no wrong. Geoffrey Rush was a charming supporting actor that matched Firth toe to toe, and Tom Hooper wasn't as annoying as he could be. We have watched our fair share of movies here at We Have Thoughts Incorporated. Many of them good, many of them not so good. We had a season of movies so mid we nearly lost our minds. It is very rare that we come across a perfect movie, but this season we did. Toy Story 3 has it all. It had us laughing, crying, scared, and thinking of yesteryear. Pixar came into our lives as children and continues to deliver some of our favorite movie going experiences today. Animation can deliver everything live action can and perhaps even more. One of the many reasons we started this podcast was to talk about great movies with our best friends and in this weeks episode, we get to do just that. The Social Network is everyone at the top of their game. Fincher's directing, Sorkin and his melodic script, and even Justin Timberlake pulls out a good performance. Each puzzle piece fit so well it created a modern classic. The Social Network will be talked about for generations to come. Thirteen years ago might not seem like that long ago, but The Kids Are All Right’s progressiveness feels a bit out dated. Lisa Cholodenko’s intimate story about a family during a time a time of transition and upheaval is done well and with a soft touch and a stellar cast, however in 2023 it falls a bit flat for us. Well, we made it this far before coming across our first mid film. A whole two weeks. If you’ve been listening to us for a while, you already know our thoughts and feelings about David O. Russell. In short, we don’t like him or his movies much, save for Silver Linings Playbook. In The Fighter, he takes on our favorite subject, sports. It’s rare to have a horror film nominated for Best Picture, but in this week’s episode we get to talk about the psychological horror that is Black Swan. This dark tale of a ballerina pushed to her breaking point is magnificently done by Darren Aronofsky, Natalie Portman, and Mila Kunis. We made it to the end of another season of our Oscar Rewind series! The Artist took home the big win, but the actual big win is this episode right here. The tide of this slow season seems to finally be turning with Martin Scorsese's ode to movies. This adaptation of the popular children's book was made for 3D and this is the first time we all felt it would have been almost better to watch it as Scorsese intended, with funny looking blue and red glasses.
