Triangle of Sadness is our new group name. Hi, it's nice to meet you. That may be the only positive we got out of this film, other than Dolly de Leon claiming the new "I am the captain now." We understand where Östlund was trying to say and do, but it didn't necessarily feel original, more just recycled "eat the rich" content. Todd Field. Cate Blanchett. A match made in heaven. Tár tells the story of a woman at the top of her field with no where to go but into the stratosphere. Instead we see this deeply controlled, cultivated character depiction of a woman unravelling. Cate Blanchett is at her best here, and we couldn't get enough. Tell us what you think! Have you asked "How soon is too soon?" about a piece of media released not too long after a historic/public event? We asked that back in 2012, and again here in 2022 about Zero Dark Thirty. Yes we now know that this movie was already being made when the events of May 1, 2011 occurred, but that doesn't change our question. While war movies aren't generally our thing, we did appreciate the Kyle Chandler double feature this season. And the Oscar goes to...ARGO. We finally made it to the end of the Oscar season and it really comes full circle for us here at We Have Thoughts. This movie may not be the best Best Picture winner, but it will also be a special one to the three of us. This Oscar season marked a decade of attempting to watch all the BP nominees for Ana and Crystal, and it was Crystal's very strong Ben Affleck opinion's that made us stop and think, "Hey, we should record these movie musings" that got us here today. We're nearing the end of our look back at the 2013 Oscar Season. Crystal and Ana get to reminisce about their early screening experience, Joy gets to talk about her love for this film all while we acknowledge the grossness that IS David O. Russell. The combination of one of the greatest directors and one of the greatest actors almost made Lincoln worth the it's lengthy run time. Daniel Day-Lewis IS Abe Lincoln and there is no doubt that this story is an important one, but we were missing the tension and struggling to stay awake. Ang Lee's visual epic took home four Oscar Statues in 2013, including one for Best Director. The story of Pi's harrowing journey at sea was brilliantly translated from page to screen giving us some of the most beautiful visual effects and Irrfan Khan stoic performance kept what could be a laughable story of a young man lost at sea with a Bengal tiger beautifully grounded. We also couldn't help but notice Suraj Sharma's name missing from the Best Actor category. What did you think about Life of Pi? Les Misérables is an epic, sweeping musical. It was one of the longest running shows on Broadway, a beloved community theatre production, and if you’ve ever seen the inside of an audition room, you’ve probably heard a gaggle of girls butchering On My Own or I Dreamed a Dream. It is a sung-through operatic style musical, so for this movie to have been a success all Tom Hooper needed was a cast that could sing. Instead, we got awkward close up of actors who can kind of hold a tune. The casting of this movie, save for Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit and Anne Hathaway, was probably the most egregious error made, and all others that followed were made worse by Hugh Jackman screaming the score at us. This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about Quentin Tarantino on this podcast and unfortunately it won’t be the last. Django reunites Christoph Waltz with Tarantino and with the Supporting Actor win. One thing we can’t deny about this film is that this cast is stacked. Everyone is giving a great performance, except for Tarantino himself at the end. The accent he chose still haunts us to this day. Visually we enjoyed this movie, but we’re not fans of listening to derogatory speech or seeing hate crimes being committed on the black community, historically accurate or not.
