  • Ep 198: 10 Questions for the End of the Year

    12/12/2023 Duración: 01h09min

It's my favorite time of year! Not because of the holiday season, but because I love getting reflective, looking back over the last twelve months and looking ahead to changing of the calendar.  The 10 questions in this episode are meant to bring introspection (if you work through them alone) and connection (if you bring them up in conversation). Bring these to your journal, to your travel companions, to the holiday table, or just let them flow through your mind in these last few weeks of the year as we wind down 2023 and gear up for 2024.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: 10 Questions for Starting Over 10 Questions To Ask Yourself in the Middle of Anything Journaling for Grownups Laura on Instagram   SPONSORS: Daily Harvest // Go to DailyHarvest.com/TellYou for up to $65 off your first box Betterhelp // Go to BetterHelp.com/YOU for 10% off your first month Uncommon Goods // Go to UncommonGoods.com/YOU for 15% off your order   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episod

  • Ep 197: Modern Manners for Teens

    28/11/2023 Duración: 42min

This episode is for anyone who loves a teenager.  I'm the mom of a teenager and a preteen, and cultural norms and expectations have definitely shifted from my own childhood in the 80s & 90s. Sometimes I feel like I'm learning modern manners alongside my kids instead of teaching them from a place of authority.  My guest Brooke Romney believes that the only thing harder than parenting a modern teen is being a modern teen. In this episode, Brooke and I talk about a few of the rules that stuck out to me from her guide 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens. This was a conversation I didn't even know I needed to have, and I loved it.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   Follow Brooke Romney on IG 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens Volume 1 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens Volume 2 52 Modern Manners for Kids     SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! • Ep 196: Symposium: Britney Spears's New Memoir

    21/11/2023 Duración: 01h05min

A few times a year, I like to let you listen in on the conversations we're having in the Secret Stuff patreon community. Each month we meet twice over zoom to talk about something culturally relevant (we call this Symposium) or to talk about books (a pretty traditional Book Club). This Secret Stuff meeting was a bit of a mashup of the two.  When it was announced that icon and legend Britney Spears was releasing a memoir this fall, I knew it would make a splash in the publishing industry and in the celebrity world. And it did. The Woman In Me sold over a million copies in it's first week of release and there were a few bombshell's from the singer's life, most notably about her relationship with Justin Timberlake.  But what is just as fascinating about the content of the book is the way she chose to tell it, and that she was able to tell it at all. After 13 years in a conservatorship held by father, where everything she did was tracked and controlled, Britney is finally free to share her side of the story. As u

  • BONUS: 4 Rules For Sharing Your Story (Especially When It's Hard) with Carmen Rita Wong

    17/11/2023 Duración: 44min

I love memoirs. I love hearing other people's stories in their own words. And, of course, I champion the idea to Share Your Stuff.  But what if the story you need to tell is really difficult? What if it's hard to do justice to the truth while also protecting (or not protecting) other people? My guest for this conversation is author Carmen Rita Wong and she is sharing her own 4 rules to doing this well.  Carmen Rita Wong's memoir is called Why Didn't You Tell Me? and is a book about secrets and identity.  Learn more about Carmen Rita Wong Follow Carmen Rita Wong   FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! • Ep 195: Why do smart people love dumb TV?

    14/11/2023 Duración: 01h07min

This episode is for anyone who has asked themselves why they're so invested in what is clearly outrageous, manipulative, and phony "reality" television shows.  I watch Real Housewives every weekday on my lunch break, and as I've gone through phases of watching with both fascination and disgust, I’ve asked myself: why do smart people love dumb tv? What is it that we’re drawn to? Why do we get so sucked into the drama? Is it aspirational or escapism or something darker or is it just not that deep?  And so I decided to explore that topic with the perfect guest: Matt Marr, cohost of the Reality Gays podcast. In this episode, Matt and I talk about our history of reality tv watching (starting with the Real World in the 90s), and we talk about how we think reality TV has changed culture, why we’re so invested in the lives of these reality TV personas, and so much more. We talked for over an hour and didn’t even scratch the surface of all that we could have discussed.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE We do have an extended cut

  • Ep 194: On Endings and Intuition (with Meg Tietz)

    07/11/2023 Duración: 01h16min

10 Things To Tell You exists because Meg Tietz put a microphone in my hand nearly a decade ago when she launched the Sorta Awesome podcast and asked me to be a regular cohost. That invitation changed my life, along with the thousands of Sorta Awesome listeners who have been touched by Meg's words and wisdom for all these years.  Meg Tietz has long been a pioneer in the online space. She was one of the earliest mommy bloggers to build a large audience and one of the earliest independent podcasters in the girlfriend chat genre. I am lucky enough to have been friends with her since our childhood years in Oklahoma and have watched the way that she has shaped an entire corner of the internet.  Meg recently announced that she is bring the Sorta Awesome podcast to a close, and in our conversation here we reminisce about her online journey and talk about what it means to decide to end something that is going well, simply because you know it's time.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   Sorta Awesome episodes mentioned: Ep. 123: I

  • Ep 191: How BookTok and Gen Z Are Changing the Way We Read + Best Books Lately (with Alex Cash)

    17/10/2023 Duración: 01h19min

Where a 40-something aunt (me) chats with her 20-something niece (Alex) about what we're reading, where we get our book recommendations, and how the algorithm affects both of these things.  I often find my 24-year-old niece reading on the couch in our shared home. Sometimes she's pulled something off my bookshelves, but more often she's in her own world of reading, influenced by her age, tastes, and, of course, TikTok.  In this episode, Alex and I talk about the differences in what her generation is reading (and why) and mine. Then we share the best books we've both read lately.  I loved talking with her officially on microphone because it reminded me that there is always so much to learn from other generations. (And because I always love to talk about reading.) • Ep 190: Whose voice lives rent free in your head? (And how to mute them)

    10/10/2023 Duración: 33min

This episode is for anyone who struggles with outside influences they can't shake.  I thought when I turned 40 that I had turned a corner in my personal developement, that the shift into caring less about other people's opinions would also mean that my inner critic would pipe down.  But here I am, a few years down the road, and the voices from my past live rent-free in my head and their chatter can affect my confidence and my choices.  In this episode, I'm talking about the five types of voices that rattle around in our heads and how we can identify them and turn down their volume.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   SPONSORS: HelloFresh // Go To HelloFresh.com/50YOU and use code 50YOU for 50% off plus free shipping   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! • Ep 189: About the Hollywood Strikes (and How They Affect You)

    03/10/2023 Duración: 47min

This episode is for anyone who cares about tv and movies.  I have 10 things to tell you about the historic Hollywood strikes of 2023. The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild have been fighting for wage increases, protection against artificial intelligence, and more. Think it doesn't affect you? Think again! Here are the 10 Things I talk through in this episode: What are the basics of the strike? What is the history here? What exactly do Hollywood writers do? How do they get paid? So why are they striking?  (And what does striking mean? Can they not work at all?) What does mandatory staffing mean? What is the AI threat? Some notable things that happened during this strike.  What was finally negotiated?  How does this all affect the viewer? I want this show to be about connection, conversation, and sharing our stuff. The Hollywood strikes are something our family cares about, so I'm sharing it here with you.  If this episode teaches you something, please share it on social

  • Ep 188: Moms and the Mental Load (with Dr. Morgan Cutlip)

    26/09/2023 Duración: 49min

This episode is for moms who are drowning in this season. After years of rarely talking about parenthood on this show, this topic suddenly continues to find me. I'm not sure if this because of my kids' ages (11 & 13) or just the season I'm in, but motherhood is something I want to talk about more now than I did when the kids were young.  My guest today is Dr. Morgan Cutlip, a highly sought after relationship expert, who has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships. Dr. Morgan has been a featured relationship expert with Good Morning America, Teen Vogue, and The New York Times. Her new book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, is out now. Dr. Morgan and I talk about motherhood as an identity and the mental load of parenting that so often falls more heavily on women. We also discuss how that affects our mood, our partnerships and sex drive. I even share a real life example of this dynamic happening in my home right now. If you've been carrying

  • Ep 187: Book Bans: 5 Things A Librarian Wants You To Know

    19/09/2023 Duración: 01h03min

The episode is for anyone looking for an insider perspective on the rise of book bans in America. My life’s greatest passion is reading. Books are my lifeblood. And so you will not be surprised that I have been greatly alarmed by the rise of book bans in America in the last few years. The idea of banning books is so archaic to me, so outdated, so harmful, it’s as if we have learned NOTHING from history. My guest is writer and librarian Emily Jones. As a former teacher and current librarian in Arkansas, Emily shares her perspective on the fear and concern around certain books that are available in these public spaces.  FOLLOW EMILY on IG FOLLOW EMILY on TIKTOK SIGN UP FOR THE 7-DAY FREE TRIAL of SECRET STUFF FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: The Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood How To Be An AntiRacist by Ibram X. 12/09/2023 Duración: 56min

This episode is for anyone who has (or wants) a Soul Sister.  In my book about friendship THE LIFE COUNCIL: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about my freshman college roommate and longtime LA roommate Lindsay Lawler. In the book, and in my life, Lindsay occupies the seat on my my life council that I call the SOUL SISTER. And in this conversation you’re going to see why. We have been connected spiritually and logistically and our lives have been intertwined since we were 18 years old. In this episode, Lindsay and I talk about living in the dorms together, living in the Hollywood hills together, the ways we (accidentally) broke one another's hearts, and the ways we light each other up. Our bond and this conversation is a special one.   But the BIG reason I wanted to share this Secret Tapes conversation with Lindsay with you right now is that Lindsay is a singer and songwriter based in nashville and her latest album comes out this week! It’s called Peaches Holyoke and the first single Trying To Get Back T

  • Ep 185: Analyzing the Results of the Listener Survey

    05/09/2023 Duración: 54min

This episode is for anyone interested in how the podcast sausage gets made. We're doing something a little different in this episode. I'm analyzing the results of this summer's podcast listener survey, where more than 1,000 people gave their feedback on 10 Things To Tell You. Listeners shared their favorite (and least favorite) episodes of the show, and suggested topics and guests for the future.  I wanted to talk these results through with you because I value your feedback and want to involve you in the bigger picture of what we're creating here. I love making 10 Things To Tell You for you, and I also want to continue to make it helpful and entertaining.  I'm also sharing some of my personal thoughts on the state of the podcasting industry right now, and as a listener, you're part of that industry. So I'm giving a little peek behind the curtain of what's happening from the creator side, based on my own experience and from conversations with many of my podcast friends.    FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED

  • Ep 182: 10 Things About 10 Years of Therapy

    15/08/2023 Duración: 01h11min

This episode is for the therapy-curious and therapy champions. Ten years ago this summer, I was in one of the lowest points of my life. I had a toddler and a baby, was grieving the death of a loved one, the diagnosis of another loved one, and the near-fatal crisis of yet another loved one. My husband was away making a movie, so I was solo parenting and circumstantially very isolated during a rainy season that had flooded our home.  And also....I had just started therapy for the first time.  I needed the therapy. Making that phone call was one of the best decisions I've ever made. But as many people will tell you: it often gets (a lot) worse before it gets better.  In this episode, I'm sharing 10 Things About Therapy that I've learned or noticed or want to share after 10 years of being on this journey.  There are practical tips and also my personal stories. This is completely my own experience and not meant to be prescriptive or authoritative - just me, sharing my stuff.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   MENTIONED in th
