Self-inquiry is the practice of turning attention inward and asking questions like: Who am I? or, WHAT am I? What is it that’s aware of this moment? At 27 years old, two years sober, and deeply immersed in A.A./12 Steps, something happened that completely altered how I experienced reality. While working in a warehouse listening to music, the sense of “me” collapsed. Time, identity, and space dissolved, revealing an unmistakable unity of self, other, and existence itself. In Everquest, the world is populated with powerful gods and dragons. These creatures usually spawn in a 12-72 hour window and if killed, drop the most powerful treasures in the game. It takes a well coordinated group of up to 72 players to bring the beasts down (less if the players are well geared and skilled.) Tomias mans the batphone in our guild. He tracks when these creatures spawn, and alerts all 995 of us when they appear. It’s an important position because all of the other guilds in the game are trying to kill these creatures & if we don’t get there quick, another group will show up and try to get all the treasures!
