When did poker become the international pastime?  It seems like everybody's playing now, even people who never gambled before.  This week's guest, Josh Silverstone, has capitalized on that to change the face of fundraising with his company, Aces Raise.  Casino night as fundraisers have always been popular.  But with the rise in popularity that can only be described as phenomenal, poker-only nights are a natural subset of that.   Josh has been playing games his whole life.  He was a chess champion all through elementary school.  (That's gotta be tough, being a has-been at 11.)  He got into poker in 2003, when the world at large did and saw the opportunities it presented.   Josh's background is in sales and sales management.  He owned several companies before this one and he's got a proven track record of success. The Attman family for years has had one of the best delis in Baltimore. But Edward Attman didn't want to go into the family business. He wanted a product that was more universal than deli and that wasn't perishable. The answer? Paper.  The resulting Acme Paper is responsible for the drink cups, popcorn cups, hot dog trays, and napkins at the Raven's M&T Bank Stadium and Orioles Park at Camden Yards. And Maryland Live Casinos, and King's Dominion, etc. You know those trays that carry several drinks and some food? Their creation. And those weird looking pulp trays are their's, too. Still very active in the business at 94, Edward has passed most of the running of it to sons Ron, David, Gary, and Steve have joined the business and have taken it beyond paper. They now also serve retail packaging for industries such as janitorial equipment and healthcare.  The third generation is now entering the ranks, with Scott, Keith, Andy, and Michael. You may not know the name, but you know the man. He says women love him, men hate him. Ron Kline invented the magnetic strip on the back of credit cards. It was taking SOOOO LOOONG to validate credit cards when you used them to purchase something, so the banks asked him to come up with a better system.  The rest – and you hear this expression a lot, but it is literally true in here – is history. As life-changing as that was for most of us, the Grandfather of Possibilities didn't make much money off of it. But he also developed the computerized systems for multiple listings (MLS) that real estate agents and developers use today. He developed the voice-response system for the banking industry.
