My guest this week is James Piper Bond, the President of Living Classrooms. It was founded in 1985 by two former McDonough School teachers, and they believed in educating through doing. Not a new concept, but these guys made it work. The goal of the organization is to strengthen inner city communities in order to break the cycle of poverty in the inner city. The Fells Point campus is built on the site of the first Black-owned shipyard in the country. The Crossroads Middle School was one of the first charter schools in the city. The recently took over the Commodore John Rogers PreK-Middle School, which was failing. Now both schools are springboards to high school and college. The kids are involved in everything: boat building, vegetable gardening, videos, books, woodworking, etc.  Living Classrooms with adults, too. This is a rebroadcast of a show I played in January. I am playing it again now because I keep hearing more and more about the possible risks of contaminants our children are exposed to.  Many children test high for mercury in their system. The symptoms are many and varied, which is part of the problem with diagnosing. It was look like learning disabilities, even autism. The good news is it's easily reversed once you catch it. And there are so many other foods we give children, and eat ourselves, thinking they are healthy, but they're health and developmental issues.  Claire Dwoskin is the director of Children's Medical Safety Research Institute.  The institute has done a great deal of research on this subject, and she'll be talking about what they have learned. What about vaccines? Are they bad for your kids? We know they prevent diseases such as measles, diphtheria, and of course, small pox. Or do they? He has been in the financial services business for over twenty-three years.   He's an expert at helping individuals set themselves up to achieve their financial goals. He does the same for entrepreneurs, with businesses of all sizes. Is investing different for entrepreneurs than for others? Big picture, short answer: No.  But by our very nature, entrepreneurs have a different approach to investing, risk, and other aspects of financial mangement. We need to think about working ON our business instead of just IN our business. That will make more sense as you listen. Also, what most of us don't think of when we're building or starting a business is how it's going to end.  Why should you think of the end at the beginning. For the same reason people think about retirement when they're twenty: You have to know where you are going before you can figure out how to get there.
