Do Not Seek Great Things for Yourself in Marriage
27/10/2019Jeremiah 45:5 - We have, by the grace of God, been considering as our theme for this year, “Divine Elevation” (Psalms 75:6-7). There are many areas of life in which people seek elevation. These include marriage, child-bearing, study, work, and business. The unbeliever, who is without any relationship with God because he has not repented from his sin and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour, looks to himself or others for elevation but is always disappointed at the end (Jeremiah 17:5-6).

Do Not Seek Great Things for Yourself II
13/10/20191 Kings 1:1-10 - Seeking great things for oneself is a mark of improper or selfish ambition that does not honour God and is ultimately, destructive. Very few passages in the Bible illustrate its destructive power as I Kings 1 and 2, which deal with the attempt of Adonijah, the fourth son of David and next-in-line to the throne, to succeed David as King of Israel. Even though his father was not yet dead, he was ready to take his place, be exalted as king, and get the coronation party started. He prepared for himself chariots and horsemen and got Joab, David’s former right hand man and commander, and Abiathar, the former high priest to follow him and help him. But where did Adonijah’s selfish ambition come from?

Divine Elevation of the Nation
01/09/2019Proverbs 14:34 - The Word that God has spoken for the divine elevation of a nation is in Proverbs 14:34: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” What, then, is righteousness? Righteousness is understood in two ways in the Bible: First it refers to the standing of those who are God’s people by means of the imputation of His righteousness that is credited to them at the moment of salvation (Gen. 15:6; Rom. 4:1-5). God’s righteousness is given as a gift by means of faith, “to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly (Rom 4:5; cf. Rom. 3:24; 5:17; 2 Cor. 5:21; Phil. 3:9).

Divine Elevation of the Church IV
28/07/2019Luke 22:14-20 - The early believers were devoted to the breaking of bread. The question that immediately comes to mind is this: Why? The obvious answer from the Gospel account of the institution of the Lord’s Supper is that Jesus commanded it.

Divine Elevation of the Church III
21/07/2019Acts 2:36-47 - The early Christians were devoted to the fellowship. Acts 2:42 notes, "And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." The New Testament word for "fellowship," koinonia, expresses the idea of being together for mutual benefit.

Divine Elevation of the Church
07/07/2019Acts 2:41-47 - There is a force at work in the world today that is more powerful and more significant than any other in the history of the world. It is not the spread of democracy, nor is it any of the anti-democratic movements that are currently active and threatening.
