  • Lift Heavy Run Long #51 with just the three of us

    24/05/2017

https://youtu.be/cbLWZS8zmoM This week won the LHRL Podcast we had a guest who had to cancel at the last moment, so we were stuck with just the three of us. To be perfectly hones, these are my favorite podcasts. Nothing makes me happier than just kicking back and talking (mostly) nonsensical BS with two of my favorite people, Amanda and Von. On this episode we talk a little about the Dragon Boat Races in Memphis, TN, the upcoming Tunnel Hill 50/100mile race (as well as the documentary), Memorial Day Murph, and the possibility of my shooting Mark Fortune. Write in, tell us what you want to talk about. Be a part of the community! Peace, Love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake

  • LHRL #50 with Richard Westbrook

    17/05/2017

Richard Westbrook is our guest on LHRL #50. Having fallen out of shape, experienced the pleasure of both natural aging along with a back surgery, he was unable to do one push-up, sit-up, and a pull-up was a "pipe dream". Despite doctors telling him that he would never run again, Richard decided to try CrossFit and found enough courage and strength to go out and run a mile. The rest is history. Below is some of Richard's accomplishments: Richard Westbrook Age: 64 (9/9/52) Started Crossfit, April 2011. Weighed almost 200#, couldn’t do a situp, pushup, or pullup. Couldn’t have run to the mailbox. Switched to Paleo Diet in August and lost 20# in 20 days. (Nutritional ketosis since early 2012.) Decided to tempt fate by running 1 mile for time – 8:04; repeated two weeks later 8:01. Called former client (National class Master’s Swimmer) to get him to try Crossfit; he politely declined and suggested I run in the TN Senior Olympics. That was a “Ha-Ha!” moment. Rarely do Crossfit these days. Weight train for spr

  • LHRL #49 with Kathy & Gary Owens

    10/05/2017

If you are from the North Mississippi area and have any interest in running, then you are most likely familiar with the names Kathy and Gary Owens. Kathy and Gary are leaders of the group The DeSoto Runners Club and they play a vital role in organizing group runs, as well as encouraging people to get out and be active. I took an instant liking to Gary and Kathy. They have a playfulness about them, and they don't seem to take it all too seriously. They both place fitness as a priority in their life, but they also believe that living life is important as well. It is refreshing to hear them speak of their lack of a training plan, but yet they stay very active. I always get a good feeling whenever I see the two of them either at local races races or at CrossFit events. I am working on roping Gary into trail running so I can drag him to some of the weekend events, where everyone lets loose and has all kinds of fun. Thank you Kathy and Gary for being such an important part of the Olive Branch fitness community a

  • LHRL #48- Paul Pinckley

    03/05/2017

Paul Pinckley is a L-1 certified CrossFit coach as well as a recognized USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach. After the birth of his daughter, Paul took to CrossFit and began placing an emphasis on fitness. He is on e of the most knowledgeable people that I know. Paul has a habit of climbing down rabbit holes of information and not coming out until he knows everything that there is to know in any given area. I have been fortunate enough to have been coached by Paul, but most importantly, had the opportunity to watch Paul coach others. He truly enjoys watching people to succeed and has a real knack for meeting people where they are and beginning to progress from there. I am glad to know Paul not only as a coach, but to have him and his family as part of my life. Raising children, getting fit, staying sane, and enjoying life is something that we have placed a great deal of priority, and Paul is really good at keeping a good prospective as to why it is important to do all of those things. Enjoy LHRL #48

  • LHRL #47 from Ragnar Trail Race- Atlanta, GA

    26/04/2017

We had an absolute blast as the North Mississippi Endurance Team took to the highway and participated in the Ragnar Trail Race in Atlanta, Ga. Anthony Lane took charge and was able to organize what is essentially a group of derelicts, minus Amanda Horrell and April Hilsdon. Sean Hilsdon was our "go-to" guy when it came to camp set-up, and Drew Womack was there for entertainment and intimidation. April Hilsdon and Amanda Horrell made us look respectable, and Brian Williams was in attendance because of his experience on the trail and background in stealing Sean's personal items. Christian Lemon was our ringer, who blew through the trail as fast, if not faster, than anyone who stepped foot on the course. After Sean was nearly arrested for trying to steal extra hamburgers, I challenged the group to a timed event around the red loop of the trail. They all conceded that they did not possess the speed or the agility that has been bestowed upon me by a loving God. So, I ran an alternative route, which was a little f

  • LHRL Podcast Episode 45 – Lorgene and Kelly Gilbert

    11/04/2017

Have you ever felt hopeless? Don't you hate the feeling of being sick, tired, overweight, insecure, and fatigued all the time? I have some people that I would like for you to meet. Their names are Kelly and Lorgene Gilbert. Kelly and Lorgene  are on a awesome and inspiring fitness journey. This week on the LHRL #45 we talk candidly with them about the changes they have made in their lives. This was a lot of fun for me because Lorgene and I were childhood friends and went to school together all the way through High School. I've been following her progress on Facebook for a while, and have enjoyed watching her and her Husband start their CrossFit experience. In this podcast we talk about how they met and how they got started on their fitness journey. I hope that you are as inspired to listen to the show as we were to talk to them about it. Enjoy the show! V

  • LHRL #44 with Petey Elliotte

    04/04/2017

I honestly don't even know where to begin. It's hard to even begin to describe someone as dynamic as Petey Elliotte. She has been everything from a police officer, to a flight nurse, to an educator, and now has made a name for herself as one of the upper tier athletes in the area. After visiting the CrossFit Games in 2016, Petey was inspired by all of the athletes, but especially those in the older, "Masters" dicision. Petey made some dramatic changes in her training and nutrition and managed to cut her body fat percentage from 26% to 11% in less than six months, in an effort to compete on a higher level. As the CrossFit Open 17.1 came to a finish, she was surprised to find herself in the top 70 in the world! She just barely missed out on the top 200 spot to reserve a place in the Regionals, but plans to make it next year. I have always enjoyed Petey, her positive, and her willingness to laugh easily. It was really a great time to just down and learn about her, and at the same time just laugh at ourselves a

  • LHRL #43 with Gus Vandervoort & Dustin Thompson

    29/03/2017 Duración: 01h09s

"The best way to defeat an enemy is to make them your friend." --Abraham Lincoln Dustin Thompson, head programmer for Olive Branch CrossFit, can't stand losing. As he has continued to make his way up the CrossFit leaderboard as one of the areas most elite athletes, he could not help but notice the competitive scores which were consistently being entered by a gentleman named Gus Vandervoort. Dustin, being an intelligent and rational person, instead of having Gus killed or deciding to make him an enemy, he reached out to Gus and they have since become training partners. Gus is a lifetime gymnast who has owned a gym since the mid eighties. Like many of us, life got in the way of Gus's devotion to fitness and found himself 50lbs overweight and living a sedentary lifestyle.  Gus suffered from a self disgnosed case of "H-Disease" which is comprised of hemorroids, high blood pressure, heartburn, hypertension and high cholesterol. He has suffered a heart attack, multiple stints, and numerous surgeries from past injur

  • LHRL Podcast #41: Brian Swanson

    14/03/2017 Duración: 01h49min

"It becomes a strange situation when you find out that, statistically speaking, your spouse will probably not be around one year from now." These were the words of Brian Swanson. Brian is a man who I am fortunate enough to be able to proudly call a friend, but more importantly, he is an excellent teacher. Brian and his wife are living life while his beautiful, strong, and brave wife, Carol, battle stage IV cancer. As a teacher, I have watched Brian inspire others through coaching CrossFit and giving of his time to help runners establish success. Nothing has meant more to me than watching Brian teach me how to honor a relationship, remain grateful in the face of adversity, and live life to the fullest. On this week's podcast we talk a little bit about everything, and spend most of the time just enjoying each others company, but in true Swanson fashion, Brian gracefully teaches us how to live a good life, when he has every reason to be bitter and down. I challenge you to love the people around you the way that

  • LHRL Podcast #40

    07/03/2017

Lynn Aaron is the owner of Olive Branch CrossFit and a big supporter of the Lift Heavy Run Long®. Being a collegiate basketball player, fitness has always been a part of her life, but, like many of us, physical fitness took a backseat to life. She found trail running in her mid twenties, which led her to CrossFit, and ultimately led her to owning a gym in Olive Branch, MS. Lynn is working hard on expanding Olive Branch CrossFit and growing it into a gym that has a focus on CrossFit, endurance running, as well as Olympic power-lifting. There are big things going on in her future and we were thrilled to get to hear a little bit about them. Peace, Love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake

  • LHRL #39 Sylamore 25K/50K

    28/02/2017 Duración: 57min

Last weekend, we had an awesome crew of folks get together and run the Sylamore 25k/50k. This is my third year participating, and I think I enjoy it more and more each year. The people we had in our cabin, in our group, and on the trail are what makes this race so much fun. The trail itself is covered in beauty. The scenery is majestic and the race itself is run beautifully. We, of course, felt the need to bring the recording equipment. I can't promise that we cover just a great deal about the race, but we sure had a great time anticipating the run. I hope that you enjoy this episode as much as we did. Peace, love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake

  • LHRL #38 with John Kelly

    21/02/2017 Duración: 45min

John has been running most of his life, and grew up exploring the mountains around his family’s home in Morgan County, TN. During college and grad school he took a full decade off from running before rediscovering his love of the mountains while hiking the John Muir Trail with his wife Jessi. He decided to start running again and immediately signed up for a marathon, which was a bit of a disaster. Since then he has seen drastic, steady improvements and in the process he discovered the wonderful world of ultrarunning. When he’s not on trails he enjoys exploring by bike so a couple of years ago he decided to also try his hand at triathlon during the hotter months. Last year John became 1 of 16 people to ever make it to the 5th loop at the Barkley Marathons, set a Guinness World Record for fastest marathon dressed as a videogame character, finished 2nd overall at Ironman Maryland, and capped the year off with top ten finishes at JFK 50 and Hellgate 100K. Most importantly, he and his wife welcomed twins to their

  • LHRL Podcast #Whatever

    15/02/2017 Duración: 47min

This week's podcast is exactly why I love doing this. It was just the three of us. Von, Amanda, and myself got together, I wrote a few topics on the dry-erase board, and we just started talking. I laughed until I was red in the face. We discussed some worthwhile topics, but for the most part, we just enjoyed each others company. I love these people and I love the fun that we have together. We love having you around and appreciate your watching. Always feel free to drop us a line and get involved. Thanks for being around! Peace, Love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake

  • LHRL #36 Amanda Horrell- CrossFitting Endurance Runner

She grew up on an angus farm and commuted to Chattanooga, TN for school and basically everything else in life. She attended Chattanooga Christian School, the University of Tennessee Chattanooga for her undergrad and Union University for her Doctorate in Pharmacy. Amanda started running a little over two years ago as well as CrossFitting. Through these two things, she is learning to love herself a little more each day.
