Georgian Bay Roots says goodbye to May 2023 by reaching for a Gordon Lightfoot deep cut about "the high side of the Bay" and the legendary Stars on 54 reboot of his 'If You Could Read My Mind'. We share some big news from the Beverly Glenn Copeland camp + his new single and talk up local appearances by Daniel Lanois, Jeremy Dutcher and The Sadies by spinning a track of each. This week's Georgian Bay Roots also features a Slint cover by local teen and music teacher Josh Bergeron (just like The Who said, the kids are alright!) and, since the timing is right with the Grey Highlands rodeo happening this weekend and for many other reasons besides, a rollicking number from Meaford songsmith Bill Monahan. The episode also takes a moment to mark the passing of Josh Arsenio, erstwhile Dromore resident that he is, by having a listen to his band Honest I's. As a belated celebration of Black History month the show howls to life with a deep dive into the music of a big musician with local ties: Eugene Smith. Tune in to hear a deep cut from the '64 CHUM charts with Jay & the Majestics, a scorcher from Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks in '65 (the year Eugene joined the band), one from his '81 album Warmin' Up, with the Warm Up Band, on Pickering Ontario's Warm Up Records (inner sleeve printed at Bennett Press, Collingwood), a jam of Eugene's that found its way onto an episode of Miami Vice starring Phil Collins and, to wrap up the segment on Eugene and this celebration of Black History month, a Black power anthem from the hardest working man in show business himself, featuring Eugene's dad on bass!
