As a belated celebration of Black History month the show howls to life with a deep dive into the music of a big musician with local ties: Eugene Smith. Tune in to hear a deep cut from the '64 CHUM charts with Jay & the Majestics, a scorcher from Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks in '65 (the year Eugene joined the band), one from his '81 album Warmin' Up, with the Warm Up Band, on Pickering Ontario's Warm Up Records (inner sleeve printed at Bennett Press, Collingwood), a jam of Eugene's that found its way onto an episode of Miami Vice starring Phil Collins and, to wrap up the segment on Eugene and this celebration of Black History month, a Black power anthem from the hardest working man in show business himself, featuring Eugene's dad on bass! Under Cult Hero you'll find the cast of said movie singing The Ascension Song, followed by the Sherri Jackson Band and Martin Tielli (from the soundtrack to Psycho Pike!). In the final segment, Elmore James, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Manitas de Plata, one from a Winnipeg outfit called Sugar & Spice (featuring a young Brian Miessner!), before wrapping it up all up with a track from Ruby Waters.

This week's show is a visit to the roots of some of Canada's best known songs, a look at people who write songs with depth about the culture they live in, the people they meet, their personal interests and passions, and their joy of living. This week on the show we've got some old favourites, some brand new releases, and lots of tracks by local musicians to celebrate the depth of talent we have right here in our own front yard. This past week here in Owen Sound we lost one of our own, songstress Lisa Stethem. Friend the show and friend of Lisa's, Mary Little, put it best with a post on Lisa's Facebook wall: "We’ve lost a bright light in our Owen Sound music community. She was a strong, courageous woman with a beautiful smile. She was a marvellous songwriter who was devoted to her craft. Our songwriters’ circle won’t be the same without her. RIP Lisa. We’ll listen for your voice, singing in the wind."
