History tells us that Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy in the spring of 1944, was the largest amphibious operation ever run in the history of warfare. In fact, the largest siege of a fortified area in history, Operation Overlord was an undertaking initially thought impossible by Allied planners when they began to consider invading occupied France in 1942. How would the massive fortifications being constructed at key points along the coast of Europe be overcome? What means, would Allied troops to get over and past the mines and obstacles on the beaches, and move inland? Today, the United States has the finest and most capable collection of Special Operations Force (SOF) units in the world.
